From what I've read, this unit appears to be best suited for recording in a band situation (it's like the multitrack cassette studios from days gone by...but better!). It has a basic fx setup but one major concern is that there is no send\return for outboard processors, just the internal fx. It offers decent digital editing features with a USB connection to a computer so you can further process your audio. It looks to be a little less confusing (interfacewise) than the typical digital recording workstation. I actually prefer its mixer setup for a home studio because you can leave your gear hooked up to individual channels, without having to re-patch all the time, or invest in a patchbay. Just wish it had a send\return for external gear.

Michael

Hi Michael
Thanks for your comments.
Yes, I agree with you.

The D888 records each track as a WAV file, which can easily be imported into any computer-based recording system, (via high speed USB 2.0).

This is part of its main appeal - it is a great mobile front-end capture recorder for using with a Protools or other system.

As a Home-Studio-in-a-box, it lacks much of the editing, automation and effect of other Korg recorders, and there is no internal CD-Burner.

But as a live recorder it really is nice because it has 8 pre-fader outputs, which means you can use the D888 as your recorder AND mic splitter, to send the mic inputs on a long to a house sound system without screwing with the house mix.

How many tracks does it record concurrently, anyone know?

I think recording each track to Wav files is totally cool. That really helps with mixdown and post-processing.

It records all eight at once. With XLR or 1/4" inputs on each channel.

This unit isn't like Korgs top HD recorders, BUT it wasn't designed for recording specifically either.

Think of it as a REALLY nice 8 channel mixer, but with some recording features as a bonus....

I used one this weekend and I found it amazing and very user friendly. It's solid and easy to back up (even with my iMac OS9).

My only only complaint is lack of midi sync (master clock) to use with my sequencers etc. It does put out an absolute MTC signal, but that's useless to me.

Maybe an updated OS will rectify that and that's when I'll buy it. I'll nurse my Yamaha MD 8 along until then, I suppose.
