An earspecialist told me that many old men
use a hearing aid. They have not allways the
right adjustment.
This could be the reason why some old dutch
guys, like John and Roel,do not hear the
real sounds when they hear a keyboard.
Some of them get grumpy.
I am not sure but a better hearing aid could
help in this cases. Or a new battery?

I can assure you John's and my ears are in perfect condition and they are very well capable to determine what is crap or what is excellent.

Keep in mind that hearing aids amplify only those frequencies that they are set for, and nearly all have frequency adjustments that are similar to EQ settings on an amp.

The problem that arrises is most males loose high frequency sounds first, therefore their hearing aids are usually set up to amplify high frequency sounds only, such as a woman's voice. My wife says this is probably why I never wear mine.

Most females loose low frequency sounds first, therefore the vast majority of hearing aids sold to women are adjusted to amplify low frequency sounds.

Consequently, those of us whom must depend on heariing aids for conversational usage can encounter problems when performing because of these descrepencies our hearing ability and the subsequent amplification of only certain frequencies. The hearing aid essentially becomes both a plug and a filter, limiting that particular ear to only those sounds that have been lost through either aging or injury. After more than 40 years of marriage I look at it as a blessing in disguise. She can't hear me and I can't hear her!

What I'd like to know is do any of you know of musicians who perform with hearing aids? I have been losing high frequencies for years and it's getting really bad. In a crowded place, it is next to impossible for me to carry on a conversation. I have wondered if it's even practical for musicians to use them while performing.

Many artists use In-Ear-Monitoring systems and you could say this is 'hearing-aid'

For singers this is a perfect solution, because there is no noise at all... they only hear music and own voice. Even the mix is adjustable to personal wishes.
One important 'con' : Musicians lose contact with the audience.

Why did you get the impression something is wrong with my ears ?

When you know that you are hard of hearing
a part of the problem has gone.
The most problems do have those men and women
that do not know that they do not hear every
thing. Sometimes they say strange things
because they did not hear right.
My mother asked me to play the march from
the river Kwai. So I did but she said "why
don't you play the melody" But I played
the melody with a Picolosound.She simply did
not hear it.

My family doctor asked if I wear a hearing aid..and I told him I have had one for a few years, but just can't get use to it..I use to wear it at church,but have pretty much stopped wearing it..
As for using while playing music,,I find it impossible for me...the accented frequences are adjusted for hearing of voices[human], making colorization of music untolerable for me...
The Doc did mention something that rings true...You should wear the hearing aid, not just for yourself, but for the people around you[annoying what was that?]..
