I think Kris may be refering to the new Yamaha PSR2000. If in fact the PSR2000 keyboard does not support aftertouch, I too would find it extremely limiting to trigger the required vibrato needed to realistically emulate string (violin, cello, string section) and wind/reed instruments (flute, sax, etc). This feature is too important to leave out (in my opinion). Can someone here PLEASE verify if the new Yamaha PSR2000 supports aftertouch or not? Somehow I think incorporating the vibrato in the sample itself would not work, (would it?!) I'm interested in hearing from others on this. - Scott

I wouldn't miss it that much on my VA.. because Aftertouch is ment to give an additional effect After-the-touch and the effects given are in common not the ones that make the part you're playing sounding better.

I just went upstairs to the keyboard that make sure that it was correct, for !me!, that I do not need the aftertouch . And if anyone has tips about using it in a 'positive' way, I would be glad to hear about that .

It's a different way of playing.
I could'nt go without it..
but I am a guitarist probably handling my keys if they were strings...

I think krix is a pianist, so he would be better off with weighted/semi weighted keys, where i would say that semiweighted or weighted keys give much better feel to handle the aftertouch as well.
This is very personal ofcourse and should be tested by himselve in a local store, just to "feel" the difference.

The only disadvantage of weighted against nonweighted in my opinion;
no hammond glissandro's unless you like to damage your fingers....

I find aftertouch is important for allowing vibrato control on sustained electric piano and brass notes and also for providing filter control on synth pads. I am also a guitarist so it feels natural to me to be able to tonally affect sustained notes using changes in pressure. Once you begin to use it is hard to imagine not having it.

Scott,
The PSR2000 does not have aftertouch. Yamaha only puts aftertouch on their high end keyboards. However, if you have a keyboard with aftertouch and you trigger the Yamaha sounds, then these Yamaha sounds will be controlled by the aftertouch of the keyboard that is controlling it.

George, MANY thanks for clarifying that 'keyboard aftertouch' assignments are controlled (via midi messages: vibrato-CC01, etc ) from the keyboard controller and are not a part of the sound sample (sound module) portion of the keyboard. I learned something today. - Scott

Kris,
Yes, you can decide and set the specific midi parameter (vibrato (modulation)-CC01, volume-CC07, etc) you want assigned to keyboard aftertouch. You should be able to do this via the controller keyboard, which supports 'keyboard aftertouch'. - Scott
