Ok so I've been dragged into the 20th century kicking and screaming.
I bought an edirol pcr M80 midi controller .
It came with sonar light which I've installed.
I've got the asio driver installed but with the Microsoft wavetable synth there is a little latency. With the Roland vsc3 it's worse, but when I use the sf2 and an organ font I downloaded it works pretty good.

So the question is there a gm sound font set I can download for free most of the links I've found turn out dead or they try to install screen savers too. Also would like a good free B3. I like the b4 but I'll never use it enough to pay for it.

I wanna use this with OMB and am having some problems getting it to work correctly but thats another question for another day.

You may wish to try the SGM180 or SGM128 GM soundfonts:

There are many others some of which you would need to purchase. A search on google may be helpful.

i know this is not what you asked for, so might not be useful, but i really believe you should make an investment and buy something like hypersonic 2 from steinberg. this is a GOOD 16 channel softsynth and it's worthy, you can even use it for recording, and in my opinion it's sounds are better than most of the soundfonts.

pretty much agree, the sgm180 is the best out of the freebies.
Some of my commercial ones don't even sound as good.
Good part is with an editor you can mix n match instruments & create your own gm bank.
I'm constantly updating mine. If I find an instrument I don't like, I replace it with an instrument from another soundfont bank.
You tend to get good and bad instruments in the gm banks.
One thing I have discovered, the larger the font, doesn't neccesarily mean it's going to sound better, & when it comes to the commercial fonts , the price doesn't always dictate the quality either.

So is there a free editor available? If I use an editor can I play sounds live like a synth. Is there something free, or cheap something like hypersonic 2. I don't need anything fancy I'm probably not going to record just play live in my music room.
I got OMB working and I'm starting to understand a little bit more.
At this point I'm not really interested in high end sounds and soft synths I just want to never be without a keyboard at home and I want it to be cheap and easy.

I do use soundfonts ( as well as an sd2 module with OMB)
I had 2 options running a software option using
Brainspawn Forte etc etc
or a slightly simpler option using an audigy nx2 usb soundcard for hosting the soundfonts.
