Hi,
you know, how a mellotron sounds?
You will notice no brilliance but tape noise, tape flutter and tape saturation.
And so you will get a good mellotron sound:
Use a flute or strings sound, the best and most authentic sample will bring the best results.
Set the LFO to vibrato without delay, add a noise sample, fixed pitching and tune it lower. Next point: filter settings. Set bandpass 125 Hz to 8 kHz or 200 Hz to 6 kHz.
To simulate the tape rewind after releasing key, set the release of pitch so, that the tone will fall down after releasing key (when sustain pedal used).
After this the release of VCF and VCA so, that it is very short, but without clicking (you will simulate a Mellotron, not a Hammond)
Now effects: I would use overdrive or tube amp, not to much drive and cut everything higher than 12 kHz.
I tried this with my Yamaha 9000 pro (my mellotron voices based on Sweet! and Live! voices).
Oh, Mellotron's strings voices are often with octaves.
If you want to hear a mellotron, the song "Strawberry fields" (performed by Beatles) uses a mellotron.
