I love my little Poly, but she's developed a memory problem lately.

I keep checking the battery, and it's at 3.29 volts, which should be fine. Nonetheless, about once a month, the memory gets wiped.

Last time it happened, I played the factory tape back into it (lost a couple of my own presets). Then I reconstructed my presets, and made a SysEx dump.

Now, when I try to play the SysEx dump back in, the display flickers for an instant, but the memory isn't restored. I'd prefer to avoid the tape, because it's so damn finicky. Anybody got a tip on restoring settings with SysEx?

Unless the battery is supposed to be more than 3 volts! Do you know the type, cause mine is just plain dead, no display, and I hate to think it would be anything more than the battery.Hadn't been that long since I played on it.mn

Jeez, that doesn't sound too good. Mine still lights up after a memory loss. I was able to restore factory presets from cassette, but it still won't respond to SysEx, and it seems it also won't respond to Patch Change any more either. Aargh.

I hooked up the tape port to my sound card, and was able to make a very high quality "tape dump", which loads in more reliably than actual tape.

I checked the battery voltage, and yeah, it was 3.2...but then I checked the current...it dropped from 80mA to 15mA over the course of a few seconds. So maybe voltage is not the whole story when checking a battery. Stay tuned and thanks for the manual tip.mn

When you say you checked the current, I hope you don't mean you put the meter across the battery terminals and set it to read current? If that's what you did, you just killed a perfectly good battery, and probably the memory contents with it. When a meter is in current reading mode, it acts as close to a short circuit as its designer can manage. It is meant to go IN SERIES in a circuit, not in parallel. Based on the extremely high current reading you reported, it sounds as if you shorted it. These little batteries are intended to put out a microamp or so for long periods, not 80,000 microamps (80 mA). Sorry.
