my friend his having a problem with his keys not coming back up after pressing them. he has a psr 3k, he is playing at company picnics outside, i told him it just may be the wheather outdoors. should he buy a keyboard with semi weighted keys instead, i told him the t2 had semi weighted keys and i believe they pivot differently

thanks,
mike

Hi Mikey,

Your friend may have got an inordinate amount of dust in the keyboard/action from playing outdoors.

It may need the attention of a technician to clean it properly.

First, clean the keys using a soft cloth lightly moistened with Endust For Electronics. This will, however, only clean the surface of the keys. Next, using canned air, lightly blast the areas between and behind the keys to remove any particles of dirt and dust that may have accumulated. If this does not solve the problem, more drastic measures will have to be taken by a qualified service person. Having weighted or semi-weighted keys will not solve the problem if it is environmentally caused. It's just a matter of keeping the keyboard clean, which should be done routinely, regardless of the brand.

Good Luck,

Gary

If they are sticking down, that sounds a lot more like something got spilled in there, rather than simple dust...

I've been playing outside in marine environments (by the beach!) and smoky clubs for decades. I've had bad contact problems from smoke-filled clubs on older rubber strip contacts on Ensoniq's, but I've NEVER had a sticky key problem that wasn't due to some idiot dripping their drink onto my keyboard...

I had a drunk spill a pitcher of beer on the keys of my Hammond M3. As you would suspect, it never caused a problem. Talk about built like a tank.

Dust will get in the key lube and cause sticking.

Is that a PSR problem, or is this widespread...?

Never seen it on Rolands and Korgs...

Sticking keys on keyboards, pianos, etc., any instrument with a mechanical leverage action, is not at all unusual. If the keys have a sloppy fit over the retaining bar and lots of space in between the keys, it takes more dirt, dust and crud to make them stick. If the keys have tighter tolerances, smaller amounts of particulate matter will make them hang up. Our local keyboard repair guy has related lots of horror stores about why the mechanics of these and other instruments fail. Sax players, clarinet players, trumpet players, and trombone players can all relate to sticking keys, valves, stems, etc., and most of these guys take care of their instruments as if they were an only child. It's not a Yamaha problem, it's just a problem associated with all mechanical devices.

Cheers,

Gary

Just one more reason to invest in a VINYL dust cover for your keyboards I guess...

Lecover.com is a good place to start...
