Does somebody know, if Yamaha plans to improve the DGX 505. Add Music Finder or incorparate the PSR 3000. Is ther a possibility the PSR will have 76 or 88 keys.

Hi,
as far as I'm aware , the dgx505 & 305 are relatively new. I bought my dgx305 about a month ago.
The only other 88 note arranger's that they make as far as I'm aware are the digital piano's like the clavinova's or their stage piano's.

best wishes

Yamaha may make improvements in the DGX series but I doubt it will be what you may be expecting.

The PSR and the DGX are two different creatures. I agree that the marriage between both instruments would be great.

But it's a wedding that is not going to happen.

I own both instruments. I love the extra keys and the layout of the DGX. In fact
(this will probably get me beat up) I am thinking about a laptop and OMB for the DGX.
Along with some foot pedals and I may not need the PSR as much as I thought.

Anyway, I wish you the best.

I think we can expect to see a software update for the DGX. It is clearly designed for Internet connectivity, and the onboard software needs some bug fixes. Fixes like this will be easy to deliver.

The fact that there are no hardware buttons for new large-scale features like MDF or Multi Pads tells me that Yammy has no intention of adding these.

I now have a dedicated laptop sitting on my DGX. I think that OMB will be the way to go. I beleive with this combination I will be able to keep up with new features just by the relatively cheap expedient of updating OMB.

Hi Douglas & Floyd,
I connected my laptop/Omb software to the dgx yesterday to give it a try. Works really well. ( I usually have it hooked up to my Clavinova)
Gives you all the intro's /endings /variations of a style instead of the 1 intro/ending plus 2 variations that the dgx styles are limited to.
Plus you can play in full pianst mode ie trigger chords from anywhere on the keyboard instead of being limited to a split (handy if your main melody voice is piano).

Gives you heaps of style editing functions. To my mind, better than the style editing functions built into the psr's themselves.

I've had the software for over a year now, and it keeps getting better with each new version.

Thanks Rikki,
I may be looking for a laptop for the DGX now.

I was also told by customer support that you could use the DGX as a controller for the PSR. I realize that may not be everyones cup of tea but I love options.

The idea of having the whole keyboard (no split) and it triggering chords is what I want.

I am beginning to think that with a little thought someone may be able to customize this set-up and be able to take request on the fly, play like a pianoist, and have a good band playing along with you.

Thanks again Rikki,

Floyd

Hi Floyd,
why don't you try the demo with the computer you've already got http://www.1manband.nl/

Interesting, the fact that the DGX305/505 only has midi thru usb, not the original midi sockets. Must have to be connected via a computer or something?? They didn't happen to mention how to do it ( haahaa)

Actually full keyboard mode is the only way I play when I use piano as my melody voice ( which is most of the time, (pianist at heart if not in ability).

OMB has an icon called "loader" on the main page, where your styles pop up. What I've actually done is clone the style & change it's name to the song name . You could actually organize your styles/(with their song names) into folders ie pop , ballads etc and if you get a request , it should only take a couple of seconds to open the folder, locate & load it.

OMB has an arranger page where you could also create backing tracks in step time ie type in chord progression and style parts ( a bit like BIAB program)and save as a midifile. It also has a sequencer with some editing functions.

As I said, check the demo out first. For me it's been the best $50 I've spent in a long time.

Jos also has an OMB Yahoo user Group.

best wishes

Hello Rikki,
"Interesting, the fact that the DGX305/505 only has midi thru usb, not the original midi sockets. Must have to be connected via a computer or something?? They didn't happen to mention how to do it ( haahaa)"

Yes, that was the problem and the solution is: the Yamaha UX16 USB interface.

Now, I haven't tried it but that is what customer support told me.

If it's true then you could turn even a PSR2100 into a 76 key board with smartmedia and performace assistance. The DGX just boosted its 32 max poly notes by serveral factors.

With a laptop and OMB fake sheets, styles, midi, etc. would be ready to go.

And of course as you said:

"Actually full keyboard mode is the only way I play when I use piano as my melody voice ( which is most of the time, (pianist at heart if not in ability)."

Now that would be something since it's exactly the way I would want to play if given a choice.

Floyd

PS I'm going to have a look at OMB. I like the set up you have used. Thanks

Hi Floyd,
I managed to midi together my Clavinova & DGX305 to my old windows98 computer. USB cable to computer (for DGX) ad an old serial cable I had floating round for the Clavinova to computer. I originally tried an ordinary usb cable for the clavinova as well, but there ws some sort of conflict going on. May need to check into the UX16 also, because my laptop only has usb.

IF the UX16 USB interface works, OMB now allows you to asign the outs to different instruments ie
Channel 1 could be the psr
channel 10 the dgx
channel 11 psr etc

I'm actually using my omb with a mixture of software synths with either clavinova or dgx.

Better point out I only use my setup at home, but it works really well.

Well Rikki you have inspired me to do a little experimenting. After the New Year and a little free time comes available I want to try some new things. The PSR is great but I am really drawn to the DGX because of the simple layout and those 76 keys.
