I own a PA-80 and find I need more polyphony.Whn in the ballad mode and I bring in the strings and the brass, the drums drop out. Many times going up & donw the keyboards, notes drop out. I'm thinking of the tyros with 128 not polyphony. Any ideas, comments? Is the tyros better. I was waiting for the PA-1, but it only has 64 note polyphony. Again, any comments, ideas?

The 62 notes that Korg gives you performs just as well, if not BETTER than the 128 that Yamaha advertises. The Tyros has layers of up to EIGHT tones in some sounds, and that can get used up VERY quickly. I'd suggest getting a Motif module to contrast the Korg sound set. That's a killer combo.

What does the MOTIF do? Is it a sound module or keyboard with arrangements? I'm not familiar. Also, in trying out the TYROS, i find the pianos clearer and the strings warmer. I also think some of the styles are better than the PA-80.

I have listened to PA80 and based on simply listening to the kind of the styles and sounds, I would suggest getting a Tyros or Genesys. I have SK880 keyboard and I can tell you that it beats PA80. My keyboard has 64 notes polyphony; and I use very complex layering and many tracks. But not once did the keyboard drop any note. I understand that many PA80 fans like the keyboard and my bias is that I am big fan of acoustic sounds. Korg usually does better job on synth sounds. If the fact that PA-80 is based on Triton engine can give any indication, it is that PA-80 strength lies in its synth sounds and not acoustic sounds.
I repeat that my bias is that I value acoustic sounds more than synth sounds. PA80 fans, please take my comments in this context for I am not putting down the keyboard.

Motif comes as a board or a module. It has great sounds with great effects and will be a nice addition to the sound of the Korg. It has strengths that the Korg is missing.

Sounds like you really need something to add extra polyphony and may be extra sounds to what you aready have. And it seems to me like you're more of a keyboard player than a synth guy. The MOTIF is not really for guys that will use it for "meat & Potato" stuff like strings and brass. It has a lot of good sounds and a nice collection of samples, but It has too many other features that you will not have any real use for. Just look for a module or a keyboard that will do simple sounds like strings and brass and organs etc. By adding that to what you already have, you will solve your problems. You may also just get a drum machine. That is what a lot of good keyboard players always did and still do. It's kind of a standard thing to use one module for strings, anither for whatever and a drum machine doing it's thing. And there are plenty of good sample playback modules and drum machines that will do the job and cost you a fraction of what something like the MOTIF costs. I can recommend a few modules if you're interested - just let me know. ED

I would probably recommend slightly older modules like Roland JV1080,Korg Trinity rack(and later models),Yamaha EX series, Alesis QSR. They seem to have reasonably good sound. However the MOTIF Rack seems like a really good deal. It's about half the price of the Motif 8 keyboard. The better way to go though is to buy one or two older synths that I mentioned - that will get rid of "POLYPHONY" problem. ED.
