"The Godfather of Soul"... a true legend. You've left us way too early, James. R.I.P

That certainly is sad news. Many styles of music including R&B, Rock and Hip Hop owe a lot to James.

It's sad! I met "The Godfather" in Lexington in 1964 while I was in college. He had all gold teeth a the time. He was stiffed at the venue, and he backed up an equipment truck and took enough stuff to cover his fee (chairs, liquor...whatever).

A real innovator, who has put his stamp on the music business and thousands of todays top musicians.

"I FEEL GOOD"!

In later life, he finally got the respect and recognition he deserved (Kennedy Center honors), in spite of on-going legal troubles.

Early JB was the best dancer I have ever seen, bar none, MJ, included. Beyond belief any human could move like that. I'd like to see a video of him in his early days again. Maybe they will do a tribute tv special.

Russ... I like your story about him taking equipment and booze for not being paid.

I saw JB in 1966 in Lansing. Mich. at the MSU field house and I was about 12...

Man what a show! He came out in a gold suit and did the whole cape thing

I think some other band like 'The Doors' was headlining
