Did a search for Art Tatum on YouTube and not only are there some clips of Art performing, but Dick Hyman shows on several clips some of what Art was doing.

Thought we could all enjoy and maybe learn something from this.

For those of you that are hearing Art for the first time, you should be aware that he was blind.

Besides that, does anyone know if clips like this can be downloaded and how to do it?

Enjoy

Scott: It's amazing what's on YouTube. Great find. Tatum is one of my piano heros. Paved the way for Oscar Peterson. If you want to hear a more modern approach with the same technical ability check out the music of John Coates Jr.

Scott,
Good find, thanks for the link as I am an Art Tatum fan also.

Don't know how to get downloads from here but wish I did.

I have been able to get video from video.google.com but not youtube.com as yet. The Google videos are already on your PC in \Documents and Settings\YOUR_USER_NAME\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\
They are in .FLV format ( Flash Video ) but aren't named so you'd recognize them. Sort the folder by file type and then you can find all the .FLV files you have been watching. If you have been watching a lot then maybe you should delete all the FLV files and then just rewatch the ones you want to save so you know you are only converting the ones you want.

Riva encoder is free software that will convert .FLV into .MPG http://www.rivavx.com/index.php?encoder&L=3 Copy the .FLV file into some other folder then browse to it with the Riva Encoder. Then change the output name to something.mpg and click on Encode. And be patient because it will take quite a few minutes. At first I thought it had frozen but that wasn't the case, it just gives no indication it is doing something. I'm just not sure yet how to get Youtube.com files.

Thanx for the info Nigel. I'll have to check into that. Too bad it's not as easy as changing the suffix from .FLV into .AVI as in Yamaha styles.

Scott, I've ammended my previous post. I can convert Google video files to .MPG using that Riva encoder but I'm not sure how to get Youtube.com files now. They used to work the same way as Google but it looks like they've changed it. Probably to make it harder for us. I'll continue to work on it though.

I/we appreciate it Nigel. It makes me wonder why YouTube and those places are set up that way in the first place. Copyrights I suppose. There are a good many videos I wouldn't mind keeping.

Yes, Scott copyright is what it is all about. I did a search in Google and found a number of articles about this. Because video can be freely uploaded that may be copyrighted material Youtube must prevent all material from being able to be downloaded and distributed. Then when the copyright owner complains they will simply remove it and not have worry that people had already downloaded it. So that means a great clip you see today may well be gone tomorrow for good.

So Youtube.com have purposely blocked methods of downloading once they read about them online. This is why that .FLV conversion I mentioned before will no longer work. Oh well, it was worth a try.

OK, I just managed to get one of those Art Tatum videos from Youtube.com I used a website called http://keepvid.com/ You simply paste in the URL of the clip and select Youtube in the site box. Then click the download button. You will see "Loading..." appear below while it gets it and saves the video to a downloadable file. When the "Loading..." changes to "Download link" then left click on that and then click on the save button that appears. I then changed the "File Type" in the browse box to "All File" ( not Doc ) and then made the filename be something.flv

I then used that free Riva encoder that I mentioned earlier to encode from FLV to MPG and voila it worked. While this may sound complicated, once you've done it, it is easy to do it over again. Now you don't have to use Riva as any software that can convert from FLV will be fine. I just mention Riva as it is free. I tried converting to an AVI with Riva but it wouldn't play back on my PC. MPG did work though, so experiment to see what files types Riva can convert to. But you will have a copy of the original .FLV video on your PC to play around with using different converters.

And I noticed that when the Riva encoder installed it also installed an FLV Player so there is no real need to even convert the FLV to see the video play.

By the way I'd use http://keepvid.com for any videos you want while it still works. I have a feeling that Youtube will block it as soon as they can.

I did notice that the resolution of the video was decreased when downloading from Keepvid.com maybe to reduce their bandwidth to be able to provide this free service which I can understand. Loss of resolution still beats not being able to download from Youtube.
