I'm really excited about the new Yamaha Tyros, and it may even end up being my next arranger kb purchase, but with the trend of manufacters making things (including KBs) smaller, sleeker, and lighter, I'm curious why Yamaha designed the Tyros with all that extra real estate both to the right of the keys (was incorporating a built in floppy diskette holder really necessary?), as well as to the left of the keys (the mod wheels certainly don't need that much space around them do they?). Is the Tyros' length (nearly 45 inches) really necessary, perhaps to provide adequate space for internal components, or is its length & depth (nearly 17 inches) just a waste of real estate making its overall dimensions larger than necessary? One of the reasons I like my PSR2000 keyboard so much is that its size (and weight) have been kept to a minimum with no appreciable empty space to the left, right, or above of the key bed. As a one man gigging KB musician, size and weight matter. The Tyros' larger size won't deter me from purchasing it as it certainly is lightweight (only weighs 27 lbs ), but I'm still curious if it could have been designed to be a little smaller, yet still have included all it's terrific features. Interested in hearing other people's thoughts on this.

Scott

Scott,
You have to feel like you're getting something for $3k.

If you're in SF.....there's more real estate on the Tyros for your money then anything you can get in the bay area for $3 mil.....that's why I moved to Sacto.

Dear Scott,

Have you ever opened up one of these synths? There's a whole lot of empty space in there! The size of the board is mainly dictated by the the size of the keys (e.g., the "keyboard". They could probably build one of these to fit in your pocket, but I don't think you'd want to play it! I don't think the size will be unwieldy for transport, and, as you mention, the weight is low. I think it will be a good gigging synth (and should be a whole lot more robust than the 2000!!!!).

I only wish Yamaha would have taken Ketron's SD1 space efficient (lengthwise) design approach. The 61 note Tyros is almost 45 inches long, yet the SD1 (with 76 notes) is ONLY 2 inches longer.

Ever been to Italy? Real-estate is pretty scarce there... must influence keyboard designs!

Go Bucks!

Scott,

I will second your thought about the 76 keys fitting into Tyros-sized board. The space on the left and right of the keyboard is pure waste of space (and the extra weight for the frame). I don't think any of us would use a floppy drive during a performance if the instrument sports a hard disk, so the "convenient floppy caddy" is a misnomer.

If they had asked me, I would suggest getting rid of the floppy drive altogether and providing a slot for the CompactFlash (or the like) card in place of the removeable media, not instead of a hard drive. This would reduce the number of mechanical (read breakable) components, and helped the weight down.

Regards,
Alex

Scott Yee already influence Ketron to implement rootless chording .

A 76 note tyro's is definately coming down the pike .

Have any of you prospective Tyro's customers one out and played the CVP209 Clavinova ?

You may find some similarities ! dano

I know what you mean, but everthing else about Tyros far outweighs the negatives.
I tried one out yesterday, and I have ordered mine (but it won't arrive until January next year). The best sound and styles I've ever heard, and the pop up screen is great for my bad eyesight.

There is a LOT of empty space in the Tyros. Most of the electronics are packed onto a tiny board near the harddrive. The power supply is at the other end and isn't much bigger. Hence why it's so light! However I don't think many will dismiss the tyros because its too big! It's much nicer to use when everything is clearly spaced out instead of closely packed minute buttons, also the fact it's silver makes it look bigger than it is!
