I was reading the manuel of the TYROS and the
only thing I am a little disappointed about
is the sequencer.

Comparing with the KN 6000 which I now use
there are not so many edit possibilities
The same for the voice editing but later I
saw George Kaye in his reply that there is a
very complete editing software program for
the computer so that is cool.

Will there be also a sequencer program for the Computer in which you can edit the
sequencer data in a sophisticated way ??!!
Maybe George will know more about it?

All the other specifications of the TYROS are
very good and I can't wait to have one!!

On the topic of the Tyros sequencer...., Did Yamaha finally add a better sequncer to this model.. I remember those complaining about teh lack of loop setting and overdub recording on the PSR-9000 and 9000 Pro.. I know you could loop and over dub in the style recorder, but that was limited as well...

From what I read in the manual overdub and looping are both now possible.

I have never been a fan of internal keyboard sequencers though I know many are... I always prefer computer sequencers which give far better results. Unfortunately, the Tyros does not come with a computer sequencer program. However, it does come with voice editing and file management programs that can be used alone or as OPT panels. OPT panels are sub-programs that can be opened within compatible sequencer programs like Cakewalk Sonar 2.0, which is a very popular pro-level audio/MIDI recording program. I think this is a very sensible idea. Yamaha has OPT panels out for the Motif and I hope they will come out with an OPT-based XG voice editor soon.

Great that's good to hear.. I was really shocked when the PSR-9000 first came out to see that the sequencer was lacking in quite a few areas... I couldn't understand why they'd make a keyboard with all those features and cheese on the sequencer..

The 9000 Pro does have overdub, but it can only be used under style recording.. If you just use the standard 16 tracks without a style you don't have the option of overdub and loop recording.. If I remember correctly I think someone said a while back you could at least merge tracks on the 9000's..

I don't know about the 9000's, but I'm using the 2000's sequencer for some serious work, and I've found it to be quite versatile and robust. My only real gripe is that the track arming procedue can get slowed down considerably by XG data "clogs", but that's hardly a major issue. No doubt a PC sequencer may be better in some respects, but this gets the job done well, and there are no compatibility issues, which is not a given when working with Yamaha/XG MIDI.

I've asked Yamaha US to give me some more details about the Tyros sequencer and here's what I received today:

"At this time, there is no sequencing program bundled with Tyros. However, the recording and editing on Tyros is easy and intuitive.

For example, to record a song we offer a Quick Record mode (great for when you come up with an original song idea), Multi Record mode, where you can create your recording track by track and we also offer Step Record mode where you can input both note and chord data manually. Tyros also allows you to record the setup on the keyboard (MIC setting, how you have the Score or Lyrics screen setup, panel settings including what voices you have chosen for R1, R2, R3 and L1 etc.) and save that with the song. Very handy for professionals. And, as mentioned in an earlier e-mail, Tyros has an incredible timing resolution of 1920 ppq.

Once you have made the recording, you can punch in and out, start re-recording from a point in which you touch the keyboard or just re-record the whole track.

After you have your song basically the way you want it, you can perform the following edits:

Quantize: You can perform the normal quantize functions plus Tyros allows you to quantize in two different values at the same time. For example, you could quantize both straight eight and triplet eight figures simultaneously. You can also set the strength (1-100) of the quantize (this function is found in sophisticated computer music software) to maintain the human feel. In other words, if you tell it to, the keyboard won't line up every single note on the beat, but will simply tighten up the performance a bit, moving notes closer to the beats.

Change the octave up or down up to 2 octaves of any channel.

Editing in the Step Record mode allows you to go in and change the values of individual notes, program changes, pitch bend values and control changes (panning, volume, reverb etc.) etc. You can also cut, copy and paste SysEx data. It should be noted that you can select sections of data and perform changes to multiple sections at once."
