I have recently been making Midi Files with BIAB with the Solo Improvisation feature to play live melody too.
An Interesting observation and a good feature of my 9000Pro when playing back a midi file from floppy, the board can still be set to keyboard split mode (as per accompaniment mode). The Tyros can and the the Roland VA's can also.
Recently trying this on a KN. this board switches to GM mode and reverts to full keyboard mode so no keyboard split is available. The only option here for playing melody is to select piano or guitar. This is no problem for a pianist, but having the keyboard split mode is surely the better option.

Does anyone have any input on playing the melody line to a midi file as backing.

I'm not sure about this one ( I'll try it on my KN6500 tonight ) but have you tried loading the floppy midi file into the sequencer and then playing on top of that instead of using direct play ?. The instrument allocations may change to something undesirable, so have a few PAnel memories set up with suitable instruments for each of the sequencer tracks.

Hope this helps
