I recently purchased a demo K2000VP with orchestral ROM from an online retailer. I got the synth yesterday and it is actually a K2000VP loaded up with all of the K2VX sounds, but the K2VX and contemporary sound blocks are defective (sounds absent or aberrant), so only the orchestral and K2000 ROM programs are good. It seems that the ROM upgrades were installed without also installing a fan kit; could this have damaged the above-mentioned sound boards? If so, should I be worried about the integrity of the K2000 ROM and the orchestral ROM? Just wondering if I need to return the demo and just get a new K2000VP. Thanks for any help.

Almost everyone Ive heard of that has purchased a K2VX has had the same or a similar problem. Its obviously a quality control issue on Kurzweils side, so youre better off either bringing it to an authorized service center or replacing the unit. Good Luck.

Chris, there is no quality problem with the K2VX or K2000VP. They are the SAME keyboard, the K2VX simply comes with more options installed from the factory.

The problem in this situation is simply that the wrong Setup chips are installed in the K2000VP by this dealer. It has the VX setup chips installed, yet it doesn't have the Contemporary ROM. So over 100 of the programs are looking for ROM samples which don't exist.

Two possible solutions -
1. Get the proper setup chips installed by the dealer...along with the fan kit that is required.
2. Buy the contemporary ROM...fan kit also needed.

I purchased my K25R from a mail order dealer and requested that all boards be installed. When I received the unit, I spent the remainder of the day at a local service center waiting for the installation problems to be corrected. However, the dealer did pick up the repair charges, including the rush charge, and it's worked fine ever since. I don't believe I'll ever again ask a dealer to install any upgrade.

Kurzrep, I KNOW that the K2VX is an upgraded K2000. The fact is that anyone Ive heard of that has purchased a K2VX with every upgraded pre-packaged, has had this problem or similar. I said nothing about the K2000VP(the one without the upgrades).

The only thing that could cause a problem like the one listed above on a K2VX would be a loose ROM block. Truthfully this keyboards get banged around quite a bit during shipping. Re-securing the ROM blocks and daugherboard would fix any problem like this.

Thanks for your input, everyone. It seems like the improper setup chip is the culprit, just as Kurzrep suggested. I'm returning the synth to the dealer (hassle-free!) and getting another K2000VPR (new) instead. I hope the new K2000 rack will be as trusty as the one I currently own!
