Hi Simon,

Well, the best place to look is at Kurzweil's site. I don't know that the sounds are any different. A big difference, for me anyway, is that the K2500 has 48 notes of polyphony while the K2K has only 24 notes of polyphony. I believe that the K2K cannot be loaded up with as much sample RAM (128 MB on the K2500) and I think that it has less PRAM which is where programs, sequences, etc. all get stored. In terms of ROM sounds, I believe they come with the same set of ROM waveforms so, if that is all you are after, then go for the K2K. If polyphony matters to you, go for the K2500.

There's probably a few things I've missed as well which should be covered on their website. Myself, I'm currently looking at the K2600 but for other reasons.

HTH,
Fernando

Hi Simon,

Polyphony is important when you want to play back sequences. If you only ever plan on playing a sound at a time or layering a couple of sounds together at a time, then it probably won't be an issue for you.

The K2000 has 24-note polyphony while the K2500 has double that at 48-note polyphony.

Two other points in addition to what has already been said: The K2500R is upgradable with the KDFX option while the K2000R is not, and operating system updates/upgrades for the K2500R are downloadable for free from Kurzweil/YCA (and other) website while K2000R OS updates cost about $100.

Hi,

Those are a couple of good points Wilkes. Kurzweil has said that their latest release of the K2000 OS is probably the last. It's probably pretty safe if Simon goes with that and makes sure that he has the latest OS installed as part of the purchase price.

The KDFX, apparently, makes a *huge* difference on the sound of the K2500 and, from what many people say, is a must.

If money is not an object or if you can afford a few more pennies, the K2500 is a better solution than the K2000 and you'll be able to grow with it. You'll need to be very happy with what the K2000 can do today as it probably won't change in the future.

HTH,
Fernando

Hi!

I bought a K2000 VP recently, and I'm very happy with it. On my case, price was a issue. Poliphony it's not that important for me because I have other sinth's, modules and a sampler. But I believe it should be for you if that's not your case. Believe me, it can be very frustrating if your run out of notes on one of those inspired moments.
