Saturday night we went to Mohegan Sun Caasino to see a Paul Anka concert ... I had not seen him in concert since I was a teenager and so was he ... WOW !!! ... what a performer he is and what a show he puts on ... and his BAND !!! ... Anka is very personable .. With the band playing a somewhat updated, high energy version of "Diana", he comes out from the rear of the arena, walking through the crowd, singing, shaking hands, getting hugs and kisses ... and when he gets to the stage he is there for 5 minutes shy of 2 hours ... of course he does a film showing his life and family, and he did a tribute to Sammy Davis Jr., but his show was first class ... even during the show he went back into the audience to sing and 'frolic' with the crowd ... when a woman yelled out a request for "One Man Woman, One Woman Man", he explained that it wasn't in the repertoire for that show, but then with some backing from the drums, guitar, bass, and piano, he ad-libbed the whole tune ... I was watching the guitar and bass players and it looked like they were talking each other through the chord changes... and the piano player was listening so intently, so as to provide the right backing ... he 'sang' instructions to the synth player when he wanted some strings added, and had the horns give him a big ending chord ... I was impressed ...
On another thread we talked about how close to the mic a vocalist should be ... Anka was for the most part about 4-5 inches away, but I was sitting just back of the sound man and when Anka held the mic further away for a big note, I saw the sound guy adjust the volume ...
it was a great show and I would recommend that you see him if you can ...
