I have a user who has not been able to get any of his XP programs to play midi on an external synth unless the program has Midi Device assignments made by the program.

The Vista default, reportedly unchangeable, is the sound card.

Many programs, including mine, use the default Midi Device that was defined in the Control Panel/Sound and Audio section in XP and earlier OS.

Are there any Vista users that have seen a Midi Device setting somewhere?

Any advice appreciated...

Regards,

Michael

It’s quite possible that the device/software he is using is not supported by Vista, and so therefore is not selectable.
I would not recommend anyone to upgrade to Vista for at least 6 months, as support for anything other then mainstream software/peripherals is very very very limited.
If he has to use Vista then he should go to the manufactures web site to see if there is an update for the device/software he is using, or try operating it in XP compatibility mode.

Hi Bill,
Michael I beleive is refferring to array of software he has written for psr owners. All freeware. I would imagine it would be a nightmare for him to have to try & update it all.

One reason I wouldn't dash out & buy vista for my music software. I use old programs like xgworks & an old xg softsynth, these programs are no longer supported. Had to get it upgraded when I went from win 98 to xp, so wouldn't want to take the risk of them no longer working if I swapped to vista.

best wishes

This user does not just want to use my programs. He would like to play his midis through winamp and have them sound on the PSR connected via midi. But he cannot find the place to assign the PSR as his default midi device.

I agree that Vista is more of a problem than a solution at this point, and little, if any support information exists. The user, a savy computer person, had to call Microsoft to find out how to Shut Down the OS! I have searched the Net/MSDN for information on the Vista Control Panel and it virtually does not exist.

Regards,

Michael

Is the Midi interface he is using compatible with Vista?
I have checked on the Winamp site and there is no mention of compatibility with anything higher then XP.
If he is using a Creative Soundcard (SoundBlaster etc) then there are also problems with some of these.
Unless he has no option, he should not even consider Vista for pro music use, as most of the software and hardware is as yet not compatible with Vista.
The default setting for the start and shutdown of Vista is the front power button.

He is using the USB driver for Vista released by Yamaha.

This CAN be assigned as a midi device in programs that have a specific assignment function. But many, unfortunately including mine (i.e. those that use Microsoft's multimedia control), are forced to use the default midi device assigned by the Control panel.

In Vista, according to the report, such midi data is forced to the sound card.

1. Go to device manager and see if the USB Midi device has been recognised, and is showing to be working correctly. (If OK Go to 2)
2. Right click the desktop and choose personalise, select sounds followed by the playback tab and see if the Midi Interface is shown. (If it is not then it may not be compatible with Vista).
3. Setup a dual boot system to allow you to use both Vista and XP. (Alternatively ditch Vista and load XP)

Where did he get the Yamaha Vista Driver, as the only one I could find on the Yamaha site was for the 64bit version? (Or is he using the 64bit Vista OS)
Most music software is designed for the 32bit Windows platform and will not function correctly under the 64bit platform.
To try and diagnose any further I would need specific details of software/hardware used. (Including version numbers)
