I am new to this, so please be gentle.

I have a Yamaha PSR 1000 and am able to create a music file and save it as a midi file to floppy. I then import this into music notation software (both Capella 2002 and Sibelius 2) on my PC where the music comes out all wrong. Without editing I re-save the file as a midi file and play the amended version on the PSR and it similarly sounds wrong. All midi files created solely in Capella and saved as midi sound OK (even better) on the PSR.

Do I need different software or even/and a cable connectivity?

HELP!!!!

Mary,
While I have never played with your specific software, what I can say is that almost all midi files have system info at the very front of them....things that tell the keyboard how to play etc. It could be that this info is confusing your software because it does not understand these "system commands."

What you can try is this...if you can edit these midi files with the software, then go to the very beginnings of them and look at what is there, if you see a string of stuff on one or more tracks, try deleting just this front part.

Hi Mary, First of all . . . . A great BIG Welcome to you to our arranger forum !

Exactly 'how' does the music 'come out wrong' when played thru your music notation software?

Though I don't use the same software as you, I experience something which may be the same as with what's going on with you. When I load a PSR2000 created midi file into my software program: Cakewalk Sonar, the midi notes of the first three tracks (MAIN, LAYER, LEFT) are "automatically" transposed a 1/2 step while the other tracks (auto accomp parts: bass, drums, etc) remain untouched. This results in some very disonant sounding music

There is a well known glitch (bug?) which causes PSR2000/1000 Main, Layer, and Left parts (midi channels 1,2,3 I think) to be erroneously transposed a 1/2 step when loaded into some external music software programs like Cakewalk Sonar.

What I have to always remember to do is to transpose midi channels 1,2, and 3 immediately after loading a Yamaha PSR2000/1000 midi file into Cakewalk Sonar. Once this is done, I can also save the file and re-load the midi file back into the PSR2000 and everything sounds fine.

Mary, assuming that your problem is similar to the one described, this should hopefully provide the solution. If not, please provide more information and perhaps we can take another direction to solving the problem.

Though I fully support Terry's reasoning , I personally don't recommend that you delete the string of data at the beginning of the tracks unless you known EXACTLY what you're deleting. Though some of the data may not be needed (mostly the SysEX type) 'some' of this data is actually critically important (patch change, tempo, etc) and MUST NOT be deleted.

Mary, good luck and please let me know if this solves your problem.

Scott

Not that I have any real idea, but could this be caused by the internal differences between midi format 0 and 1?

Mac,
The difference between the two formats....for general info....

Midi 0 puts all the data on 1 track

Midi 1 seperates it to as many tracks as were recorded

or visa versa....I keep forgeting which is which.
