I've just purchased a 9000 Pro. I'm interested in knowing more about the plug in expansion boards that are available for it (and other Yamaha synths). They are mentioned in the Keyboard review article and also in the 9000's product information on the Yamaha web site. But, there are no model numbers or clear explanations as to the exact features/specs of the modules. Any info?

you'll find the names and a voice list of the plug-in boards in the appendix on page 204 in your 9000Pro user manual.

On the first link which shows the PLG Piano module, it says

" For the serious piano player, this Plug-in Board is loaded with hundreds of painstakingly sampled piano and keyboard voices"

Now it was my feeeling that the "Pro 9000" had a Grand Piano sound in anyway!. It OK paying Several Thousand $Dollars$ for a Pro keyboard........only to find you have to upgrade the Piano to get a "Real Grand" piano sound. You have the PSR2000 scot that I know, but what do you think of these Piano plug-ins for....Piano/keyboards? Its like getting an Acoustic Piano and having to buy some new strings (not cheap), when you feel it is time for a "better sound"

Hi Nimrod: this just points out the parodox of the perfect piano sound. There really is none. Even in the 'real' piano world, some people like the Steinway sound, some people prefer Yamaha, Bechstein, Baldwin, Bosendorfer, etc. . .

The Yamaha 9000pro definitely comes with an excellent sample of their top end Yamaha acoustic Grand. I like it a lot, but personally still prefer the Steinway sound. With a piano plug in expansion board, it's the next best thing to owning a room full of different acoustic pianos, all offering excellent sound quality, but each displaying a unique timbre, suitable for a variety of music styles and playing sitiations & tastes. Every individual acoustic instrument (especially pianos, violins) possess' uniquely different harmonic overtones, which in turn gives it that uniquely special character. Nimrod, it's not really a question of BETTER. It's more about offering more choices. Variety is the spice of life, right?

Scottyee, you have said it all. Beauty is in the ear of the beholder, as the Spirit moves. Variety is the spice of life (and music).

Does anyone know where I can download sample sounds for any of the expansion modules?

Hi Nimrod,

I read a review on a german site that the piano plug-in board is one of the first, that Yamaha created. Apparently it is a bit outdated and the "Pro" Grand Piano sample is much better.
It is only recomended if you want a lot of different piano sounds.
