This is a song called "Still" by Lionel Richie. On the lead track I used the Tyros' Sweet! Flugel Horn.

I wanted to give people an idea of how the Sweet! Flugel Horn sounds on the Tyros.

Very nice. Good composition, well sequenced. I like that Flugel :-)

Since I have a reputation to think about, I must have something to nag. And of course I found something Doesn't the Tyros have a nice crescendo-cymbal?? Just hitting the crash-cymbal 20 times in fast triplets sounds terrible. Too bad for this otherwise great sequence!

Burkels,

Does the EXR-5 have a good Crescendo Cymbal?

Unfortunately the Tyros to my knowledge doesn't have a crescendo cymbal programmed into it. Just the crash cymbal as far as I know which sounds a little harsh especially in a mellow type song. I agree that a good crescendo cymbal that is 'soft' in its sound would be more pleasing to the ears. I don't understand why Yamaha didn't put one in the Tyros seeing that a crescendo cymbal is a common and basic form of music that is used extensively in drumming.

If the EXR-5 has a good Crescendo Cymbal programmed into it then I say kudos! to Roland for doing that since the EXR-5 is a much lesser expensive Arranger than the high end Tyros is.

If you could provide a demo (if the EXR-5 has a crescendo cymbal that is) of it in action, that would be nice.

Best regards,
Mike

Unfortunately... no. I just wondered if the Tyros (being superior to the EXR-5 in versatility, no doubt about that!) didn't have one. If you want to "brush up" that part of the "Still"-sequence, you could consider to use the two crash-cymbals, alternating, I mean. This way you get a better "flow" in the sound. (I use that often when I want that "crescendo" effect). I couldn't find the "Still"-midi, I assume you did it all yourself? (I'd love to 'feed' it into the EXR-5, we could build up a nice comparison-collection of keyboards this way!)

Regards,
Bart

Mike.....what a beautiful job. Excellent work. The subtle strings in the last bar or 2, whoa....them little hairs are standin' on end.
You had a question about a crescendo-cymbal. Have you tried building it from scratch, by this I mean, and correct me if I'm wrong, I'd use the full cymbal over 3 bars, the last bar being the first of the bridge. Then go in and adjust the parameters of each bar pertaining to the cymbal, ie:attack, peak level, intermitent(if you have it) level setting, effect.
Don't get me wrong, your efforts were terrific, and I for one can't find any flaw in your piece.
Beautiful piece of work, and great song. I used to sing it with a revue band. Brought back a lot of good memories.

Sometimes using the Reverse Cymbal will work to get that crescendo effect. And increasing the attack time of a Crash Cymbal can help too. Also sequencing one in manually from scratch is an idea but a time consuming one I should think.

I've just discovered that Twiddly Bits has on their Vol 4 Drums & Percussion CD some crescendo cymbals on it and the neat thing is it's all in Midi Data so your able to apply them to any sound you want. Since the Tyros can't load or read .Wav, .Aiff, or Akai samples, the Twiddly Bits CD sounds very intriguing and I will definitely check them out more thoroughly.

Besides it would save a bundle of time of having to make them from scratch.

Best regards,
Mike

True Mike, but as with everything else digital, you only need to make it once, then you've got a base to build from to create a library. I've got some bizarre percussion effects produced, not used all the time by any means, but I can draw them up anytime, tweek 'em and they're suddenly their own entity.
Just my thots....
