Hi all,
I am looking for some kind of softsynth, (wavetable) that will play standard GM/GS/XG MIDifiles. I know that it was something called Virtual Soundcanvas a few years ago. My soundcards on board wavetable isn't very good. Another one was Wingroove and Yamaha's SYXG100. Any ideas?
Many thanks!

Hi

You don't mention platform/sequencer - here is a discussion with some suggestions specifically re VST format

Edirol Hypercanvas
M-Audio Key Rig
Hypersonic 2

Except Hypercanvas, the others have additional sounds

If you can take somewhat lower quality:
LiveSynth pro & sYnerGiGS Soundfonts
LiveSynth Pro & SGM180 GM Soundfonts, Papelmedia or Titanic

Higher quality but slow loading:
Colossus
Bandstand (will be updated to improve loading times, etc.)

Hello,
Thanks for the info!
The Colossus synth, where can I find it? Do I need to use any sequencer with it in order to play MIDIfiles? Many thanks!

Fran, is right Colossus is expensive but I think there is a group buy on right now. Colossus comes with the kompakt player (VST, etc.). So you would beable to use it within a host (Cubase, Sonar, forte) and play midi files. However, because the instruments are very large the loading of them is slow. This is ok in a studio but not so good for live performances.

Frank, can you give more info on the group buy on Colossus? Also when you say that it takes a long time to load sounds can you give an example? I am interested in using it on my Lionstracs Mediastation. If you preload the sounds could that make this program more suitable for live performance?

Richard take a look at this site: http://www.soundsonline.com/sophtml/details.phtml?sku=EW-164G

If you preload the instruments you are going to use for your live performances then there is no lag time switching from one instrument to another. You would just be changing from one midi channel to another. This is how I use instruments such as these within kontakt as my lead or melody instruments. I use Bandstand or LiveSynth Pro for my auto accompaniment with very good results.
