I've always just bought generic music Store Midi cables for my keyboards, but I got to wondering - is there a difference? Do some cables make synths sound better or perform better, or better yet, does Roland recommend types designed specifically for their keyboards?

It will not make it sound better, but the better the cable, the more reliable it will be.
I've run MIDI down a 20 metre balanced cable before to run some MIDI lighting - it worked a treat.
I've used Hi-Fi DIN calbe before as MIDI leads, again no real problem.
