I have a shur line matching transformer that converts an xlr to a male quarter inch plug, will that work with the tyros? Or should you just use a low impedance mic straight in with the 1/4" you guys talked about on the other post.
thanks Mike

I would always use a transformer cable for a low impedance to 1/4 input..

Though I have an impedience matching XLR to 1/4-inch adapter, it has always resulted in significantly reduced signal strength from my mics when using them with the PSR series. When I switched to a direct adapter cable, I had normal signal strengths, no distortion and excellent results.

Give the adapter a try--it cannot damage anything, and it may solve some of your problems.

Good Luck,

Gary

I was using a matching (Radio Shack)transformer with my Tyros and getting poor results. Not only that but it was another clunky addition to an otherwise sleek setup. I just took a regular mic cable and cut the end off it and soldered on a 1/4 inch phone jack. It works great. There is no need for the matching transformer.

RadioShack sells a cable with the male XLR connector on one end and a 1/4" TRS on the other - I have a couple for my mics when using an amplifier without XLR inputs (my old Peavey KB-300). This works well. Wonder if it will work for a Tyros too.

Holy smokes, I never, ever thought you could do this!!!!

Wow, I've got to give this a try. This isn't a rule of thumb right? The Mic must match the impedance of the input of the keyboard; correct?

On most instrument amplifiers if you plug a low impedance mic into a 1/4" input without a transformer it will technically work but you will have to turn the volumn all the way up and it still will be barely audible.m Thats why I always use a transformer but I guess in this situation with a tyros it is different.
When I worked at the music store the kids would always try to cut corners and use a 1/4" cable to plug into an amp and the next day they'd be back to buy the transformer.
Some of the amps especially the keyboard or acoustic amps have mic inputs that will work with a low imp. but use a 1/4" to do it.
My roland kc does.

I think Don Mason told me about buying the proper cord. Instead I just made mine. There is no problem with having enough gain on the Tyros with it setup this way.
