I need to know how to create my drum tracks so I have editing control of each instrument I record.

When they all appear on MIDI channel 10 it is impossible to have individual control.

I am using an XP-80 and MOTU Freestyle for my sequencer.

Oh, is there anywhere I can get a free patchlist update for expansion cards?

Thanks everybody!

Jazzvox: I fought the same battle with my R8 before I sold it, and to this day fight it with the DR-770. I don't think there's any way to individually control the instruments (by which, I presume you mean panning, attack/decay of the drums sounds, pitch, etc. for each drum).

About the best I could do was to record a drum track into the sequencer, then split each note value into a separate track. This would at least let me use the MIDI volume controller to affect how loud each drum sound was.

If you find another way. please let me know!

You will really need to get an editor for the XP-80 to do this, or actually do it for the instrument itself.
It may be possible to do it using non resistered parameter continous controller numbers, but it will driver you mad - I know I did it with a old Boss DS-330 GM module.

I would edit the synth directly (if you have no editting software) and get a balance your happy with. I tend to have the kick and snare sounds as high as they can go, and back off the cymbols (hi-hats included).
I would also adjust the reverb send levels while I'm at it, bring the levels right down on the kick drum, and cymbols, nothing worsh than reverb on kick - turns it into mush, unless you like that sort of thing.

Once your happy with you ideal rhythm kit SAVE IT.

You can use TeeJay's suggestion too, however you will not be able to use MIDI controller messages on each track as all will effect MIDI channel 10, but what you can do (and what I think he ment) because each drum part is on a seperate track you can add velocity or decrease to adjust the releative level.

Hope this helps.

One way is to turn on "transmit Edit". Make the changes in realtime. Another way is to create a user patch with a drum wave assigned to each tone. It will only give you a 4 drum kit per patch, but you can create as many patches as you need and put them on whichever midi channels you wish.
