The subject of diets came up again on a separate thread, but this seemed to warrent its own.

My wife placed both of us on the Southbeach diet at the beginning of November. I weighed 243, she weighed...lets just say much less than that.

Her goal was to lose 15-20 pounds by 1/1/2005...

My goal was to hit 200 by March 1st, 2005...

She has lost 8 pounds so far...and is on one hand pleased but misses the food she used to eat.

(Here's comes the part where's she's pissed at me...)

As of this morning, I now weigh 215...I've lost 28 lbs. in about 6 weeks. I feel better, my trousers are looser, I've not needed any of my Aciphex (Reflux) medication for a month and feel great.

The kids are raving about how I've dropped weight...which of course, drives her nuts.

I have not cheated...and plan to stay the course.

My wife while happy I've dropped the weight, never dreamed I'd do better at a diet than she did, lol...

A-hem...

Time for some flowers, I think!

Hey Bill,
Writing as you neighbor from Cincinnati Women always lose weight slower than men. It's their genetic disposition to store fat (very easily) for reproduction. Your signifcant other's weight will come off, but not at your rate. Tell her not to get discouraged.

Stick with the flowers, don't even mention the word fat, and provide her with lots of encouragement to continue the program. As of this morning, I'm down 49 pounds, and my loving spouse has dropped 42 pounds. We both began the program in June, and for us their is no longer a desire for things such as sweet chocolates, sugar, white bread, potatoes and pasta. One of the things that may be of help is to log on to http://southbeachdietguide.com/forums/index.php which is a great forum for those on this program.

Get her a health club membership for Christmas, especially where she can be enrolled in an aerobics/fitness class. Diets alone are not the answer. My wife is getting one of those armband MP3 players to work out with as a present (at her own request).

Men also have more muscle mass, and muscle burns fat.
I'm more or less on the GI Diet, not to lose weight, but to control and hopefully lower my blood glucose. I eat lots of food and I'm still losing weight. I'm suppose to eat 6 times a day. My mid morning snack is often times, 1/2 a 750ml bucket of yogurt (no sugar added though) with 2 fruit.
I should be trying to avoid the white foods of death: white flour, white sugar, and white rice. The naturopath told me that white flour is almost equivalent to sugar in its effect on blood sugar.
Even though I eat and eat and eat, I am still losing weight.

Bill I've dieted enough for 20 people in the last 25 years.

If you weighted 243 and the wife weighted 243 she probably would lose as much as you if she didn't cheat. But there no way a 145 pound person male or female is going to lose as much weight as a 243 pound person especially in the beginning of any diet with very few exceptions. And who knows who's cheating even if the person doesn't realize they are messing up and eating the wrong things if they really are not in tune with the program.

The diet that is most conducive to longevity and weight loss too features these:

1. Complex carbohydrates: Stay away from white anything, and food coloring doesn't mean it's whole wheat. Try new grains like brown rice, quinoa, buckwheat, amaranth, spelt, kamut wheat.

2. Healthy fats. The best are extra virgin olive oil and expeller pressed vegetable oils. Small amounts of organic saturated fats are good. Omega 3 oils from fish or flax or walnuts are important. Stay away from farm fed poultry, pork, and beef. Besides being unhealthy, the cruelty heaped upon these farm animals is unfathomable.

3. Eat lots of fruits, vegetables, nuts, and legumes.

4. Exercise.
