I was uploading the update from the website and number 29 did not go thru and afterwards the screen went blank. the backlight lights up but nothing on the screen. Does anyone know if there is some sort of fix, short of taking it to a service center?

That really doesn't sound good at all. It sounds like a failed firmware update which will certainly mean taking it to a service center to be reflashed cos you won't be able to do that now the keyboard won't respond to any buttons.
