Wow

Just think of the possibilities when Arranger manufactures incorporate it as standard. (Who knows perhaps Audya already has)

Exciting stuff... revolutionary, even.

Mind you, he's only demo-ing it on guitar parts (and acoustic ones at that) that have strong transients and well defined harmonic structure, this may prove far more difficult on dense, sustained chordal material. But it's a breakthrough, nonetheless...

However, as this will not see the light of day from the inventor himself until much later this year, and requires a degree of computer horsepower far in excess of what is in arrangers today (and may even prove too much for many computer DAWs if you want everything else to play at the same time), speculation about this making it to the Audya is wishful, at best.

You saw the files being analyzed offline before the process started, ruling it out for realtime use, for the time being. But, maybe a few years down the pike, this WILL be the way to go. But I predict we have a good five or more years to go before an arranger can provide the horsepower to do this on several parts simultaneously, while still running smoothly at all it's other tasks.

We live in exciting times, don't we...?

Wow! That was a great video, it very clearly explained the technology, what it can do, and the benefits it can bring.

The future looks bright!

That's really incredible! It looks like the technology is being targeted, for now, at project studios. I would bet that this is going to be a very pricey piece of software for now.

It looks like you could use the tech to just copy a vocal track and then paste harmonies over it. But the vocals they were demoing, had a lot of space. Many vocal harmonies change notes in mid-breath during changing chords.

They showed the technology with guitar and keyboard. It would be interesting to see how it worked with vocal harmonies, strings, organs, and other instruments.

If you look at the demos for the current, monophonic Melodyne, you can see several demos of changing notes mid note on sung stuff, and it is quite believable. I don't see this as a big problem. Plus, if you could copy and paste, or just move notes about (as we were shown), a LOT could be done to vocals.

My only misgiving is whether this technology works as well on more sustaining material, like strings and BV's. Guitars and Rhodes all have VERY defined transients.

Time will tell...

yes, right
Time will tell...
And the time start to shown that the right way to take is the PC X86 system Open Source and not the old dated and limited DSP ( AMD quad core is the new future too and cost about 100 euro)
The right product must have the full integration hardware/software system to manage in realtime the all musical application that you like, without limitation.
need also that the system is able to open multiple sentence and ASIO ports: http://www.lionstracs.com/store/images/2008/massive.jpg http://www.lionstracs.com/store/images/2008/antares.jpg http://www.lionstracs.com/store/images/gui2007/os2/melodyne1.jpg

and with some panel keys, switch to the engine desidered in realtime.

You don't like one sound or you need one external hardware sound expander?? Just load and manage in realtime the VST's or ASIO sounds engine that you like better ( garritan GM2 is amazing too) or ton of the all available module.

USA Company like Trinity: http://www.trinityaudiogroup.com/
start to sell this new amazing product too, less for 1000 US dollars! Where you can load the all VST too.
600 US dollars you can buy one PC laptop and load the same sounds, I don't understand why to pay xxxx dollars for one closed, recycled and dated hardware products.
Time will tell...and for sure will also slow slow kill this all dated embedded closed system.
we will see....
