Zuki,

Fran is right--Omni is the problem. The next time you buy a mic, look carefully at the pattern sheet and the frequency response. Stick with cardiod, hyper-cardiod or super-cardiod and the feedback problem will go away. And, at least to my ears, the sound quality is far superior.

Good Luck,

Gary

Yep,

The omni is most probably the problem, although I didn't get that information from earlier threads - had to figure this out myself after research (which I should've done to begin with).

So, sent it back and might stay with Shure w/the Countryman E6DW7.

One more question - what Airline 77 headset? Anyone tried this? Having an all in all unit might be interesting.

Zuki, if this is the system you are talking about, it's very similar to the one I used a few years ago--it's great. You can use it with any microphone, headset or handheld. I used it with the Samson Q7 and also the Crown CM-311A with excellent results.

Well, for me, I very much want a "micro" headset - the flesh coloured, out of the way, "stuck to your cheek" one that most modern performers use for TV and the like these days.

I'm tired of the "big black mike in front of my face" look.

I am worried about one thing though. At least with my current mike (a wired Shure WH-20) I can pull it away from my mouth for really big notes, and push it closer for softer "whisper parts". Even with controlling my voice, there are STILL times (I believe) where you have to use (a little) mike technique, even using a headset. With the "micro cheek" mikes, it looks like you can't move it - it's stuck there.

Anyone use these particular mikes?

Do you find they work well "dynamically"??

Hi Hellboy,

Those really small headset mics are usually really expensive. I found that out whilst researching the one I bought.

As for big notes, I reckon you could just run some insert compression on your mic feed, which would certainly flatten out the peaks. Used judiciously, it could work well.

I am selling a wireless headset mic at the moment and I will contact you through your website if thats okay?

Dennis

You also have to understand that a large majority of TV and stage performers using headset mikes are also using in-ear monitors, too, and they don't even have loud monitors, or few speakers of any sort on stage.

This obviously reduces the tendency towards feedback or just plain weird sound while the mike picks up everything around it. Because of the small capsule size, even the best hyper-cardioid headset mikes pick up more off axis than equivalent hand held mikes.

Were I to try some of these out, at the very least, I would be recording my show, and comparing the sound to earlier recordings of hand held shows. Don't buy hype, be objective and listen critically. There's a reason that hand-helds still are the majority, even for top pros...

Understood, but feedback/unwanted noise is not a problem for me, what I am worried about is the dynamics of the latest headsets.

I'm thinking I'll have to put at least a light compression on my vocal to combat this.

Anyone use the latest HS's??????

I've been using the Crown CM-311A for the past few years and it has consistently provided superb vocals. Prior to the Crown I used the Audio Technica PRO8HEx, which was OK, but nothing to rave about.

I tried the Countryman E6I, which is nearly invisible, but regardless of loads of tuning and tweaking, the mic sounded thin and lacked fullness of sound. Beause it was omni-directional, feedback was a huge problem, especially when if you have a soft voice and need a fair amount of gain to punch out a song. I sent it back. And, when I talked with the dealer he said he did not recommend it for singers, but it worked great for speakers and church ministers.

I will be trying out a Shure Beta (can't remember the model), a mic that a friend is current using and says it sounds better than his E6I but does not have the feedback problems. I'll let you know in a few weeks if it fills the bill for me.

The only complaint I have about the Crown CM-311A is it's fit and appearance. It's not a comfortable mic, and it does not adjust well to fit over the ears in comfort. The windscreen and mic head are a bit larger than I would like and because the entire mic is black it sticks out like a sore thumb. I just purchased anohter spare and I think I'll try painting the mic boom and windscreen flesh colored to solve at least one of the problems. Overall, IMO, it's the best sounding headset mic I've come across thus far.

Good Luck,

Gary

OK, the million dollar question:

What about the impact of new FCC regulations come 2009? Will this make these models obsolete? Mikey and I were talking about this the other night.

What are your thoughts? Is it safe to buy at this time? Are there "safe" models that will handle upcoming changes?

Can you elaborate on that Zuki?
