Can someone help me with these questions
(XP-30), I'm new in this:

How can I split the keyboard?

What is GM mode?

What is the meaning of the PC connection?

How do I spell the Manual? :-) hello? I'm just a norwegian schoolboy and not a wizard.

What can I do with MIDI (Don't laugh)

first things first:
Midi is a language in which different (midi-compatible devices) communicate. Via MIDI (Musical instrument digital interface) you can for instance play a keyboard on one synthesizer and control the sound source of another. You can also record midi data by 'communicating' to a sequencer in a computer and make the computer play the recorded data exactly as you meant it.

different machines use different sound sources that's why they invented the GM (general MIDI) standard. It consists of a standard set of instructions, a standard set of instruments, standard number of midi channels, etc....
Using general midi, people with different synthesizers can play the same midi data with the same sounds (well, they sound very different nonetheless but you get the idea).

okay, you connect to different devices via MIDI-cables. You can plug 'm in the back of your XP-30. usually you connect the midi in and out ports on the Roland to a midi-interface on a computer (it's most commonly located on the soundcard and looks like a game-port, well actually it is a gameport most of the time).
there is another way to connect to you computer using a serial cable (i wouldn't recommend it however).
this is why you can switch to pc-1 and pc-2 mode. these are still midi-connections.

Splitting the keyboard is something different: you have to change a patch or performance to do this. Check the manual if you think you're up to it. but start with some basic midi stuff first.

good luck
Bas

Thanks for that one.

I've got new questions right under my arms:

Why is there only 128 sounds in the GM MODE on my XP-30(and not too expensive)?

What is the best way I can edit music with XP-30?

Got some TIPS?

What kind of equipment do you recomend?

Thanks for helping!

Ok.............if you look at all the other banks on the xp30 they will actually either have 128 patches or 256 patches (the banks with 256 patches are in MIDI terms 2x 128 patches), It is literally just the MIDI standard. If you were to download a GM Midi file off the internet say, it should sound simular too how it was written........ie all the patch names should be the same and the sounds should correspond i.e on any GM instrument patch 1 should be Piano 1 (or patch 0 if the patches range from 0 - 127).
I would suggest purchasing a simple MIDI sequencing package to start off with and learning how to use that. I still use a very old version of cakewalk, but for what i do it is all i need. Get something such as Cubasis VST or a version of Cakewalk home Studio which you should be able to pick up quite cheaply!!

Already ordered Cubasis VST 3.0
Nice Prise. Thanx for the tip.

Got the computer cable works fine. But. When I'm trying MIDI files, it just works in GM MODE. How can I do to play the midifiles on the other 1500 Sounds?

If you want to use sounds OTHER than the GM sounds ... you need to either write the sequence yourself, or edit the program changes. GM is used so anyone can hear the arrangement in it's intended form. If you want fancy ... you need to learn how to do that yourself.

Is there any software updates for the drivers that follows XP-30.

I need it to work on the 2000/XP platform.

I need serial midi drivers
and EMAGIC JV/XP DRIVER.
