I'd like some response from fellow XP60 or XP80 users as to where the synth fits into your setup. Is it central?

Do you, for example, use the onboard sequencer to control external devices?

Having recently acquired the HIP HOP expansion to fill the last slot(others boards are SFX, VINTAGE & EXP II) I'm amazed by the sheer power of this synth to produce fine sounding work with no need for external devices. What do the semi/professionals say to that?

I just ask because more and more I am moving away from PC sequencing towards the XP. I wonder where the possibilities lie. I'm not interested in the what the manual says about this. I'd like to know how real people use their synths.

All responses will be greatly appreciated.

Well, I've used PC sequencers many times before. However, when I got my first XP50 and now XP60, I use my Roland exclusively for sequencing. It's one of the most powerful workstation sequencers out there.

Don't get me wrong, we don't have some of the luxuries that PC users would have. An example would be a larger screen, naming of sequenced tracks and larger resolution. However, I'm startgin to like it more and more when I can do everything from one area. I like having a board that can take care of everything.

A lot of people scoff at the 96ppq resolution, but it has never really bothered me as I have created complex pieces with the XP60.

To answer the question, my fully expanded XP controls my Roland SC880, VS840 and SP202. I have my Roland Octapad hooked up to My XP60 to play the drum kit sounds live as I hate using my fingers to drum program (although I do it pretty well if I say so myself).

The only thing the XPs can't do is sample or import samples like other synths in the same price range. This use to bother me, but then again the ROM cards provide a great number of sounds. The Hip-Hop board is excellent, it has a number of sounds and is good for more than Hip-Hop.

Hi there. I have had the XP-80 for 5 years. I started to work with computer (cakewalk) and I find that both way are different, though I personally felt that sometimes the XP-80 "choked" the MIDI event very often. I also just purchased a XV-5080......ooola-la.....Superb-Sounding-Machine.

Anyway, if u ask me can the XP-80 be a central unit without any external device, it's a definitely YES. I've programmed for albums, jingles, demos on this unit without any external device(s) before I got the computer and the XV recently. Since I also work as a part-time lecturer in a college, after I did some simple demo on the XP-80, 7 of my students went to the dealer and bought the XP80 with 2 exp. board each! Can you see the amazing power of this machine?

Anyway, I like this forum a lot. Hope to know more of the XP/XV freak, like me.....

P/S: I have: Orch. I, World, Hip Hop, Techno, Asia, and Latin. Check out the Asia card.....splendid.......

Hey DeJazz, how is the Latin Exp. Board? It says there are like 52 guitars on it. ROland touts it as having some really great quality guitar samples. They say the same for the Brass. Can you confirm this? Are the guitars enough to rival some Sample CDs?

Hi there, the infamous Epu.

I have just got my Latin for less than 2 weeks. Have not really gone thru' it, but yes, the guitar sounded very real, especially when u hit it hard, it bends the pitch as well. Check out the patch "Pullup Nylon", if u happen to audition this board. Blow u off.....

For me, I bought the Latin for the percussions and the loops as well.....superb.

Hmmm......I was just wondering how did u upgrade to become a member?
