does anyone know if these boards read yamaha .sty files? and is it possible to alter the voice assignments (ie, change the drum kit) once they're loaded into the keyboard? I remember the MM6 didn't allow for any changing of voices/kits, which makes me think the newer psr's will have the same or similar architecture...
thanks in advance for any help! played the E413 the other day and was surprised by it. if it's possible to load in styles (via USB cable it seems, not, alas, a stick drive) and then "tweak" them a bit, this might solve a problem or two for me.
thanks

tm

The PSR-S550 will do this for sure. It has a style creator that lets you edit the styles. You can take an existing file, make some changes such as revoicing, adding to the drum track, and so on. You can also create a style from scratch. You can load in styles and tweek those as well.

I've played the E-413 and nowhere do I remember seeing on that unit the ability to revoice a track (I could be wrong), but from what remember it's very limited in style editing.

Tom, I have played around with the PSR-e403 quite a bit. You cannot "revoice" the factory styles, but you can load one user style into RAM. You can have 5 user styles in the board at any one time, but only one available for use.

The style has to be pretty simple (I think the .sty file has to be less than 36KB). I figured this out thru trial and error. Obviously you have only two variations, intros, endings and fills. The tracks can contain standard Midi voices or "XG Lite" voices. I successfully created a user style with a different bass voice.

You might be able to edit a commercial style with some of the many 3rd party utilities, that are available for Yamaha styles.
Good luck!
Ted

Or you could buy the PSR-S550 and get a nice keyboard with a "Style Creator" built in that will allow you to load in new styles and edit them (internally) without having to rely on external gear.

You might want to have a look at the manual for the S-550 and have a look at the style creator section. You'd be surprised at what all this model will allow you to do (especially in this price range).
