Hi, I am looking at buying a JV1010. Can you tell me a little bit about what it can do. Example, what all the different modes do. I need to know in particular if it can do split voices and layering. By layering, I mean can you combine voices, like piano and strings?

The JV1010 is a VERY cool little box. You can split it many ways -In performance mode, it can be 16 different parts in any range you want - in patch mode it can have a split or layer on the same midi ch. It very well may be capable of much more, but these are things that pop into my head. I play mine as a "patch" only synth so it can be controlled by 1 ch only. It shines as a general midi module, so dig in! I also highly recommend the 60's & 70's board - that'll give you the greatest pre-programed organs available. Combined with the on board sounds and the (included)Session board - the sound banks are overflowing with useable, terrific stuff.

I have a Roland Ep-9 I'm going to be controlling it with. The Keyboard can't do splits or anything. Does the box do the splits and layers all by itself?

Indeed it does! But you'll need a computer
to edit them in. It's impossible to edit this
thing with the knobs on the panel. It comes
with SoundDIver software which has a nice
graphical interface and gives you access to
all the JVs functions. So if you don't have
a computer, it's probably better to get a 1080 or any of the other models.

Yes I have a computer. What kind of port on the computer will I need to connect it to the box?

You can connect the JV1010 to your computer using existing MIDI interface, or using Mac/PC serial port, using Roland Serial Cable (not included with module, sold separately). The bundled Sounddiver CD includes drivers for serial cable connection.

I don't have a MIDI connector on my computer. What does a serial port look like? I'll see if I have it.

Assuming your computer's not too old and is a standard tower case there should be a pair of serial ports next to the parallel printer port (underneath the keyboard and mouse port).

They should be 9 pin ports shaped like the printer port but less wide (unless you've got a very old PC in which case they may be 25 pin).
