Spurred on by some of you guys New Year's resolutions, as of 1/1/09 I've been doing a two mile walk and a 7 mile stationary bike each day. So far I've gained two pounds. Looks like the only thing that's improved is my appetite. Can't work on too many things at once though, I'll start with the healthy eating thing 1/1/10. Good luck with YOUR resolutions.

when you want to loose weight a diet never helps.... it will be gained back double the amount whenever you stop with the diet and start your bad eatinghabbits from before...

When you want too change your life start with this...

- every day, airobics workout/sport atleast an hour.....
-3 healthy meals every day and a healthy snack every 2 hours...

Thats all you need to live healthy... when you're used to the above pattern... you can choose one moment every day to eat or drink something unhealthy... thats the only thing working in the long stretch

Well, I'm back on the diet/exercising/behaving thing...

Simply by NOT eating poorly, with zero exercising, I've already dropped 7 lbs since NYE...

Booze weighs approximately 7 lbs/gal. Sounds like you've been able to get a gallon of booze out of your system since NYE. Good work.

You have to keep in mind that everyone's body is different and will respond differently to diet and exercise. A workout and diet routine that works for one person may not work for the next. You have to find what works for you.

I keep in shape and lift weights at least 5 days a week. I manage to keep in shape with just a 30 minute workout. Diet is a big thing.., but not always going to work. I will say the main thing to keep in mind with eating is PORTION size. That's really the big killer. Many people stay in shape by eating the same foods and exercise.., they just don't go overboard on the portions. We're a nation hell bent on "SuperSizing" everything. We treat every meal like an all you can eat buffet. Plus so many of us have been raised by parent's who said "finish your plate".

Another thing to consider is "snacking". Empty fillers will make it very hard to lose weight. Plus a very important thing to remember is set a "cut off time" for your eating. People don't often realize how much weight they can gain in their sleep simply because they pigged out shortly before going to bed.

After my dinner..., I'll have one very small snack. I will not eat past 7pm either. I don't even eat really healthy foods either (and to be honest what's really healthy today when you consider it costs more to buy a tomato grown in dirt than one "genetically" grown). Today's foods are so overprocessed and full of chemicals it's not even funny. You can't even trust the labels anymore because they've been fudging those. Plus other nations won't even take our food. They'd rather starve before taking food from the US.

Geez.., look at what the food is doing to our kids. Their bodies are maturing so quickly from all the growth hormones in the meats. When I was 13/14 years old you could take a girl the same age.., place her on her back and slide her under a door! Today you can't even tell which one's the mom and which one's the daughter... YIKES!!!!

I still eat fast food, pizza, deep fried foods, ect and manage to keep my weight down. I just eat in moderation. Again everyone is different and for myself I'm lucky. I'm not a young'n anymore but still (how I don't know) have the metab of a 12 year old.

Chas - thanks for keeping things on the LITE side. Wish I could say the same for some of our MORE SERIOUS posters. Although this is a serious subject, I think you were trying to put a humorous spin on it.

Let the flailing begin...

First and foremost, losing weight is simply a fact of burning more calories than you consume. It's not rocket science--it's common sense.

Secondly, the amount of calories consumed during exercise is minimal at best, and because the person doing the exercise feels they have expended a huge number of calories, they tend to overeat to compensate for this.

Finally, lowering and maintaining a healthy weight usually requires a lifestyle change, which most folks are not willing to do. The South Beach Diet is a structured program that, if properly followed, will bring about rapid weight loss. And, if you follow the program religiously, including the phase three segment, you will keep those shedded pounds off for life.

Exercise will make you healthier by increasing muscle mass, increase stamina, improve lung and heart function and improve brain function--these are proven facts.

The reason I, and many other forum members, recommend the South Beach Diet is because IT WORKS. Three years ago I lost 55 pounds in just 5 months using this program, and although I've gained back 15 pounds during the past three years, it was because I was dumb enough to get sick and end up on Prednisone for an extended period of time. DNJ lost more than 100 pounds in less than a year, and a host of others reported similar weight losses, of which the vast majority have kept those pounds off.

The secret to success with any diet is to follow the program exactly as spelled out. If you deviate from the structured weight-loss program you will not lose those pounds. If you revert to your old eating habits that caused the weight gain initially you will regain the lost weight and continue to gain.

Good luck Chas, I'm confident you can do this.

Wait a minute. It just occurred to me. A third of Donny's posts are about pigging out with Fran over some decidedly unhealthy breakfast/lunch featuring such fare as chocolate chip pancakes smothered in strawberry syrup, etc. What's going on? Is he 'binging and purging'? Does it work? I can do that. Beats riding that stupid bike. I'll stick with the walking, though. That's an hour I don't have to listen to my wife describing her latest gardening challenge. Am I rambling? I hate even the thought of this dieting stuff. Buttered popcorn is good for the soul (especially while the Eagles are winning).

Chas..., I'm tellin ya man you'd be surprised how much weight you can lose just by simply watching your portion size, cut back on the snacking a tad, and simple exercises.

I know plenty of people who still eat the foods they love.., they just eat a reasonable meal. Do some light exercise and still lose weight.

I still eat all the foods I like, but eat within reason. I don't over indulge.., don't over snacke (which most people do just to fill space) and do a light 30 minute workout 5 days a week. My wife is dropping pounds simply by walking on our treadmill.

If you got the system..., that Wii Fit is AMAZING! Very surprising the workout you can get from that thing.

Chas the SBD definitly works I lost 100 lbs as Gary stated a few years ago.....I stayed in it religiously to the letter for a few years........although my biggest accomplishment & second hardest thing I ever did besides QUITING SMOKING 25 years ago COLD TURKEY & NEVER touched a cigarette to this day...but now due to my own fault I slipped back into some old habits and put back on some healthy weight.....the SBD taught me how to lose & how to eat healthy also. It's not easy, it deems very strict commitment, the balance of weight loss & happiness is a tightrope......don't listen to anyone's claims just do what makes you healthy & happy. All our bodies are different....you'll never be a runway model, but you can certainly achieve a comfortable weight & a happy life for sure regardless of what stupid society preaches.

Good Luck

My biggest enemy Chas.., the evil I fight with every day is COFFEE! There's a reason they call that stuff "liquid crack". Enough cups of that a day (with cream and sugar) can put up a block on weight loss. Try and cut back on coffee and you'll even detox doing it!

I average lots of miles on a bike a day....you, know, my Harley, Suzuki, Cushman, Kymco or kit bike. And I try to approach 100 miles per hour at least once every month.

Ya think that helps? I'm sure i'd lose a lot of weight if I fell off!

Yeah Russ.., it's easy to lose weight when your exercise program's end result is your limbs falling off

I've been doing weight watchers for the last year. I've lost 88lbs to date. I spend 90 minutes everyday in the pool. I'm about to start a dumbell regimen to compliment the pool.

I wanted to offer my sincere thanks to everyone who posted here, particularly Squeak and BBBB. Very enlightening....and nice to know I'm not alone in struggling with a stubborn metabolism.

I picked up some good solid hints and tips here, so I wouldn't mind seeing more postings.

Water...I was lucky enough to be told about the health benefits of drinking water in large amounts when I was 18. Since then I don't go anywhere without a container of water and drink it roughly every two hours whether I'm thirsty or not. In the morning I drink 32 oz immediately over a 1 one hour time period and then I drink casually during the day until I've reached 3/4 to 1 whole gallon. I find when I forget to drink water, my body gets tired immediately and that within 30 minutes of water intake I get my energy back.

In December, I leave myself a note to remember to carefully watch what I'm eating and how much I'm drinking to get through playing events. I find it has a definite effect on my energy and, particularly when I don't drink soda or eat sweets, I don't suffer from aches and pains from the night before.

Not to mention mucho vitamins and extra amounts of Vitamin C.

Life can be a challenge.

Brian,

I've been reading through this a few times now. Interesting that you "sing better" too. I found the same thing happens to me when I lose weight. And...particularly more energy.

You wrote: "Sorry for the length of this post."

Don't be. I got a lot out of it. A good overview......no gimmicks, no tricks, no magic elixirs! Just straight will power.

I've been athletic all my life but have been slacking off this last year.

You wrote: "When the doc says you are going to a have a heart attack before you are 60 or you are on the way to becoming a diabetic it made me wake up."

Me: That keyword "diabetic" caught my attention again. Diabetes: easy to get.....impossible to lose!

I'm keenly aware of diabetes but it doesn't hurt to be reminded of it regularly!

The equation for target heart rate is: 210 minus your age. It's a standard that has been around for as long as I can remember. Keep in mind, though, that if you are taking a beta-blocker you cannot attain this rate because of the effects of the medication.

Good Luck,

Gary
