I wanted to offer my sincere thanks to everyone who posted here, particularly Squeak and BBBB. Very enlightening....and nice to know I'm not alone in struggling with a stubborn metabolism.

I picked up some good solid hints and tips here, so I wouldn't mind seeing more postings.

Water...I was lucky enough to be told about the health benefits of drinking water in large amounts when I was 18. Since then I don't go anywhere without a container of water and drink it roughly every two hours whether I'm thirsty or not. In the morning I drink 32 oz immediately over a 1 one hour time period and then I drink casually during the day until I've reached 3/4 to 1 whole gallon. I find when I forget to drink water, my body gets tired immediately and that within 30 minutes of water intake I get my energy back.

In December, I leave myself a note to remember to carefully watch what I'm eating and how much I'm drinking to get through playing events. I find it has a definite effect on my energy and, particularly when I don't drink soda or eat sweets, I don't suffer from aches and pains from the night before.

Not to mention mucho vitamins and extra amounts of Vitamin C.

Life can be a challenge.

Brian,

I've been reading through this a few times now. Interesting that you "sing better" too. I found the same thing happens to me when I lose weight. And...particularly more energy.

Don't be. I got a lot out of it. A good overview......no gimmicks, no tricks, no magic elixirs! Just straight will power.

I've been athletic all my life but have been slacking off this last year.

You wrote: "When the doc says you are going to a have a heart attack before you are 60 or you are on the way to becoming a diabetic it made me wake up."

Me: That keyword "diabetic" caught my attention again. Diabetes: easy to get.....impossible to lose!

I'm keenly aware of diabetes but it doesn't hurt to be reminded of it regularly!

The equation for target heart rate is: 210 minus your age. It's a standard that has been around for as long as I can remember. Keep in mind, though, that if you are taking a beta-blocker you cannot attain this rate because of the effects of the medication.

Good Luck,

Gary
