#25345 - 07/24/00 02:02 AM Software or Onboard sequencer?

Of my current knowledge about the world of sequencing, newbie is an understatement.

However, I've managed to aquire an XP-60 and Cakewalk Pro Audio 9. I'm wondering what some of the experts think about the pros and cons of using a software vs. the onboard sequencer.

I know I'm going to have to buckle down and learn one or the other.

Currently, I see that the onboard is cumbersome and looks tedious to learn whereas cakewalk seems pretty simplistic to get started.

However, it sure is nice to just stay at the synth when recording and not flip back and forth.

So what do you experts use?

Thanks

Justin

I am not an expert but have been using Cakewalk Pro Audio 8 then 9 for a couple of years. So for what it's worth...

My opinion is that it is good to get to know the capabilities of all you equipment.

However no one could ever convince me that sequencing onboard could ever compare with Cakewalk or one of the other high end computer based products. I think your first impression is right on the money when you stated...

I would just add - Don't let the simplistic nature of Cakewalk misslead you. There is a lot of depth to discover in Cakewalk - as you will find out.

Have fun.

I love the onboard sequencer on the XPs to record little 1-8 measure hooks/melodies, basslines, multitrack grooves, beats, etc. It is especially handy when I am on the road, as I am quite often. But, when I want to actually use the sequences as part of a song or build a song from them, I save the sequence as an SMF-1 and load it into my software sequencer (Logic). Moving things around and editing in general is quite a bit easier in Logic than in the XP's sequencer. You should be able to learn basic sequencing on the XP's sequencer in one "session"; it's a breeze.

I do all of my sequencing and arranging on my XP60 (Full Ten Minute Tracks To - No loops!!). The sequencer is powerful and intuitive. The graphic display helps, and there are a host of editing options.

Using an outboard sequencer sort of defeats the purpose of getting a workstation in the first place.

The Infamous EPU.

Thanks a bunch for all the responses. I think I have a better idea of what the pros and cons are now.

So.. I'm learning both
