Hi--

I was wondering if anyone was aware of any software that can look at a multi-track MIDI file and output what key the song is in and also the chord progression?

Obviously one can do this one's self by just listening to the file (or looking at the notes in a sequencer) and figuring it out, but I'd be really happy with something that could do this automatically and save me this step.

Either stand-alone software or a feature of a bigger program would be fine.

Anyone?

GNmidi is a great program. Very inexpensive and easy to use.
If you're using Yamaha, Midiplayer works great, and it's free.

If you have a Roland, it will analyze the chords as you play the SMF, and output and display its' best guess, usually as accurate as any software ones.

Just like MIDI notation transcription, analyzing an entire piece for the correct chords is more of an art than a science. Some pieces it is spot on, some present more difficult challenges. Passing notes can give fits to automated transcription software, as well as the fact that often, much is implied in music rather than always being cut and dried.

Thank you for the reference to gnmidi. This program looks like it might work for me.

Yes, it can be more of an art to hear the chords, so I fully suspect the program will be wrong sometime. But it will be a good place to start. A good program would look at the bass and chords (rhythem guitar, piano chords, etc) in a multitrack file, and ignore things like the melody, or maybe let the user select which tracks in a multitrack file to look at.

Thanks again for the references.
