Hi Bill

Here's a recording of Sidney Bechet doing Petite Fleur, a song he composed which was a hit in France in it's day.

BTW, did you do it as a Tango?

Woops,
entered this post full of expectations, thought the topic was "Sex questions"!
Got to clean my glasses....

"Petite Fleur" always make me think of Acker Bilk.
The way that man play clarinet, wow.
"Stranger on the Shore" is one of my favourites.

Cheers

Bill, at my best guess I would say that the sax was not recorded properly losing a lot of the full sound/tone. When there is a problem identifying the instrument it is normally the recording.

Having said that, the rest is good. It’s good for the times it was created. Here in Florida, the home of seniors, I have heard many successful small bands playing with this type of sound catering to the people of that time. And I might add getting paid very well.

I had a conversation with another Bill of the jet set of Palm Beach years back, and he said that the older jet set will pay dearly to keep the kind of music that they are use to hearing – the kind of music they grew up with. Very little bottom and lots of treble, very much like the old 78 records.

My music had a drive to it – it took me a while to understand what they wanted. Turn the bass down and play gentle slow songs and I must agree with some of what’s being said – in general, not the song that you were playing, a snappy up tempo is desired. That might be another way of keeping them alive. (Grin) No remarks here -- I am one of them.

Good job Bill, brush up a bit on your recording skills.

IMHO John C.

Another thought on this subject.
Back in the early 90’s I met a great One Man Band. He used several keyboards to get the effect we get out of our present keyboards. He programmed his instruments – sax and clarinet, with a lot of vibrato, put them slightly out of tune and cut a good part of the bass. He repeated that thought with the rest of his keyboard.

He sounded authentic – he captured the time. A true pro.

Hi Guys - The soprano sax definitely has a very unique sound. I find that it fits nicely with lots of styles.

For Gunner Jonny - here's my version of "Stranger on the Shore".
http://www.4shared.com/file/105974637/3a2f3ba9/Stranger_on_the_Shore_-_Randy_Sherwood.html

Played this one on the straight Selmer soprano. I created the arrangement using rhythms from Band in a Box. Added my own electronic piano part as well as the pads in the background (T2). There is a some very nice guitar work in the background and a very nice guitar solo on this cut that was added by a friend of mine in Nashville. His name is David Martin. Great player!

Hope y'all like my take on Acker's great song!

Randy

Diki - thanks man! I actually did the sax part of this recording in Nashville a couple years ago at my friend's home and today I added just the pad sounds.

For those who would like to listen to this cut in "Acker Multimedia" style... I went ahead and and put together a slide show and put this song on my YouTube page:

Thanks to all who give a listen and thanks again Diki! I hope your Spring is going great!

PS - David Martin is indeed a great guitar man!

Randy
