I need some advice on Roland sound modules. I used to have one of the Roland JV keyboards (stolen in Philly 6 years ago) and I liked the sounds/setup. I'm looking at the JV-880 or JV-1080, but I'm wondering if there would be any benefit in looking at the SC-88pro or the SC-880. The most important thing to me is the sound. I'll be using whatever module I buy with my Wersi digital piano at live gigs and as a unit with Cakewalk.

It depends, Do you like to edit your sounds exstensively, If so, The JV/XP/XV is the way to go. For compatible ,best all around sounds with sequences, the Sound Canvas series is the best, 880,8850 and the new models. I use the G1000, it has many of my favorite sounds from my XP80...Fran

Kahlil, soory to hear about your stuff being stolen. I have both an XP60 (JV2080 w/keys) and an SC880. They oth complement each other nicely.

The XP is great for it's programibility and expandibility, but some of it's sounds could use tweaking and programing. As a preset box, the SC880 rocks. The SC880s Pianos and Electric Pianos outclass many other instruments in its price range. As a matter of fact, many of the sounds on the new Roland XVs come from the SC880.

The best thing to do is to look, experiment and decide for yourself. The SC880 is a very underrated module, so it can be found for cheap. Here in NY, I've seen it go for $150! When they find out how good it is, the price will go up.

The JVs are going for cheap now too. Look, listen and decide.

Most of the sequencing I've been doing in the last 5 or 6 years has been strictly for demos, composition, accompaniment (I'm a choir director) and music publishing. I haven't needed quality sounds. Back in college, however, I did a lot of "final product" oriented recordings with sequenced drums, bass, piano, organ and synth sounds with live guitar and vocals in the final mix. I'd like to get back into that . . . more for myself than for any other reason. My gigs are mainly solo piano. But because I also do shows, do studio work, play in jazz combos and work with singers, I would like a good module for live gigs too. My Wersi digital piano has great piano sounds and a great touch, but no additional sounds.
