YasSUH.

It is good to see some young'uns bringing back one of the good ole good 'uns like that.

I remember when, if you couldn't blow Clifford Brown's solo on Cherokee -- you couldn't get a gig, man.

Thanks much for the headsup!

Now I want to hear them play it FAST

I played with Phil Woods' bass player (not the one in the video) a couple weeks ago in a big band. He comes down to Florida every once in awhile. I look forward to playing with him again!

Scott ... me too ... enough of this 'ballad' stuff ...

Mac ... if you were referring to ME as a "young'un", Phil Woods only has 10 years on me ... no wonder he got to the talent line first ! ...

--Mac, after looking at your homepage, I can't help but wonder what interest you have in arranger keyboards. Do you use one professionally? for teaching? composing? arranging? Just curious. They would seem to be at odds with your resume'.

....NOT that there's anything wrong with arrangers

I sent the link to this video to the guy who owns the Falcon Music and Art Center in Marlboro NY that I and a few others did a tribute to a former band member last week ...
He tells me that the guitarist Vic Juris - http://www.myspace.com/vicjuris - has performed at the center about a dozen times over the years and will be there next month with David Liebman. http://www.myspace.com/davidliebmanjazz

Guys - WOW! Yep, you don't play Cherokee if you have stiff joints in your hands (or feet!)! HA HA. Wow..that was a cooking version of a cooking song! It's great to see that the universal language of music and jazz in particular is still being spoken (very very very fluently in this case!).

Thanks for posting!

Man, wouldn't you hate to be the upright player? I've been on jobs where you were playing something that tempo and didn't think I was going to make it. Charlie Barnett was one of the most interesting band leaders from that era. He was from railroad money, I think. He hired the best around under, say, a 6 month contract, recorded a killer record and then let everyone go home for the remainder of the contract. Some of the best music from the period.

Thanks, Tony, for posting Cherokee by superior players!

R.

this is superb. I can relate to the tempo. The gypsy hombres usually play 2 or 3 tunes per show at this tempo. It's a trio, violin, upright bass, and me on guitar and accordion. Even though I do it, I still have to take a deep breath and pray before we launch in. Lol. I don't know if you ever get used to it to the point where you don't have at least a moment of "yikes".
