Guys...and Girls,
Has anyone ever managed to create a really decent song using the inbuilt sequencer in the XP60/80?? I am pretty up on all the functions of the XP60 but the sequencer seems to be unbelieveably tedious to use! Programming in a complicated drum pattern seems impossible and seems to take forever. I find the best way to work is to sequence externally from a computer and then record the MIDI data onto the XP60 via the slave option in sequencer mode. This way, when I am on the move or just mucking around on the XP60, I can experiment using the patterns function for new ideas and then if need be, send this MIDI data to a sequencer for further editing/tweaking.

Don't know if it counts as 'really decent' but the song Not For the First Time on my website (see below)uses the XP60's sequencer exclusively for drum and percussion parts. All percussion was written directly into the sequencer, bot via an external device.

I used sounds from the Bass and Drums expansion card.

The sequencer is a pain but, like all these things, it sort of gets easier after a while.

What do you think of the song?

Martin

Martin,
Have to say......thought the song was great! very impressed and well programmed, nice to see someone who understands about the importance of velocity on drums! I find that the sequencer is good for this sort of music. However, I have found it impossible when I am composing say, complicated drum and bass lines where you are snapping the beat often to as litle as a 32nd triplet. I will put some of my stuff online so that you can have a listen.

P.S That drums and bass expanion card..........any good? I have the techno one. Are the new wave forms worth the £250??

Hi Doc,

Thanks for the kind words.

I really like the Bass and Drum card. For me it easily has sufficient additional good sounds to justify the price.

As a bass player by background, I think the bass guitar and acoustic bass sounds on it are fantastic (though in truth I still usually end up playing the bass myself!).

The drum sounds are streets ahead of what comes loaded on the XP60. Lots of choice, and quite 'believable' sounds - especially cymbals.

Can't compare it with the techno card, which I've never heard I'm afraid.

Looking forward to hearing some of your stuff when you post it up.

All the best,

Martin

Sorry, This is completly unrelated, but couldn't help noticing that you are English (most of the guys seem to be American!) so I checked out your website. PR hey, interesting and London is not far from myself. I am presently studying at the University of East Anglia in Norwich....thats just up the M11.
My girlfriend is hoing to go into PR and I was wondering whether you had any tips etc.. about geting into it (she is a final year studying Art History and Lit.)

Humm, I had an XP50 a few yrs back, And i was able to make about anything I could think of. Now the XP60 is about the same exept it has more memory for your sequences and more functions. I know use a Triton and an XV5080 and to me, my old XP50 had a better sequenser than my Triton.

You can go a check my site out at www.mp3.com/RuslaY. I have about 12 songs on there. And the ones on the bottom of the page were all made on the xp50, and the ones closer to the top were made on the triton.

Check out http://www.mp3.com/karimkhimji

I have made all the songs using my XP-60 sequencer and all the original tones (i.e no expansion board used). Although there are features in the sequencer that I have not quite mastered but on the whole I think it is a great sequencer.
