I think that Roland may be using this [Matrix Modulation] as a marketing tool rather than being truthful about it.

I was reading up on the specs behind this. It seems that Matrix Modulation is already present in the Super JV and XP series. If you look in every patch edit menu, you'll see that any three patch parameter can be routed to the three main controller sliders.

What this means is, for example, you could have Reverb, Chorus and Filter sweeps routed to one slider. You cn do this for a total of 3 or 4 controllers (including the C1, C2, Modulation Lever and the 4 data sliders).

So what do you guys think about this?

I did not want this thread to die without an answer, but I am still trying to figure out what matrix modulation is. My current understanding is that it is like an intermediate between a controller and a destination. The controller controls the "matix" and the "matrix" controls the destination. I guess this can be convenient. However, Roland's implementation is not very thorough.

I used to think that matrix modulation meant you could route anything to anything, like on my old Kurzweil modules. That certainly is not possible with the 5080.

matrix is something oberheim use on Matrix 12 to make sounds like on a modular synthesizer.

Well, the whole point that I was getting at was that I think Roland was using this as a marketing getup rather becuase it was already present on the XP/JV line. It just wasn't talked about.


There are a total of five controller sliders on the Roland XP60/80. Each controller can control four destinations. That makes up a complex 20 routed matrix. Follow me?

One controller could be used to control Reverb, Attack, Resonance and Phaser for example. Imagine taking advantage of this with all five sliders. Everything could be routed everywhere. On the other hand, I don't think that the XP/JV line used this to it's advantage.

I think that this feature may have been more useful is Roland included 3 FX processors on the Roland XP60/80. Why did Roland leave this out? The JV2080 has three processors and cost way less than the XP series.
