Folks:
I've recently purchased a JV-1010, and am pretty pleased with the balance of price and sounds. However, I have a Yamaha portable keyboard costing half as much which has a better range of MIDI brush drum sounds. I recently rented an Alesis DM-5 as a separate drum module, but it has exactly 3 brush sounds, and they're completely inadequate.
Anybody have a suggestion for not much money? I'm especially interested in sounds like the continuous swish of a slow jazz ballad brush. Does the Roland Bass and Drums expansion board have decent brushes, including that? Anything else?

It's really about music, isn't it?

You know OS, I have the SRJV80-10 Bass and Drusm board. I scoured the board looking for brush patches or waveforms and couldn't find any. Some of the loops on the board employ the brush waveforms, but I haven't seen any patches that use them.

There are spectaular drum sounds and bass sounds, but there is a lot missing on this board. On the other hand, even without the brushes, this board is a must have and even puts the Korg Triton's stock drum sounds to sleep.

HI!
I don't know if this is any help, but I too have the JV-1010 and agree with you that most of the sounds are fine. However, I also have the Yamaha SW1000XG soundcard and consider this to be far superior to the JV regarding drums. If you want to listen to brush swirls from the SW1K, go to www.peoplesound.com/artist/necessityandtheinventions
or www.necessityandtheinventions.iuma.com
and listen to/download the song No One Is a Fish.
The card is almost 2 years old, costs £350-400, but I reckon it's well worth it. Compared to the JV-1010 it's a marvel of user friendliness...
All the best,
Magnus

When you say sound card, I'm assuming you mean sound card for internal computer installation. Strictly external stuff here. I'm a schoolteacher, and my musical life bounces around between school, home, and performance situations - I take only computer files and my sound setup (mixer, sound modules, signal processors in a small rack), and hook up to whatever computer has the software I'm using for sequencing. Internal computer cards are a problem.
The cut you mentioned (interesting work!) definitely uses sounds which will do the job. I notice that Yamaha makes drum machines - I'm hoping they share the drum sounds your card has. Any experience?
Thanks again . . .

Hi OS!
Glad you found my song interesting - and sorry about taking computerisation for granted. Yes, the SW1000 is a PC/Mac soundcard. However, the same soundset and soundengine is incorporated in one of the Yamaha sound modules (they were actually taken from this module and put onboard the card), the MU128 if I don't misremember (any Yamaha dealer would know if you mention the SW1000). Have a look at http://www.yamaha.com/cgi-win/webcgi.exe/DsplyModel/?gTGN00005MU128
and good luck with your soundhunting...
All the best,
Magnus

My friend I hope this is not to disturbing, but the BEST or realest drums I have heard are on the SRX-01 Dynamic Drums card.It is $350 in stores or $250 at zzsounds. It demands a 3080 or 5080 Roland sound module.I sold my 1010 and got the 3080(way more fx,tweaking, flexibility.)The brushes on this card are so good you will thing someones in your living room.In my opinion this machine kills the triton, trinity, and the proteus.Good look.Go listen.

No, not disturbing, but currently unreachable. Being as my MIDI dabbling is an avocation ranking in fiscal justifiability slightly above improvements in personal transportation, but just below a new kitchen counter for the wife and college tuition for the daughter, it'll be a few "days" before I can justify purchasing a sound module costing more than triple the one I just bought - and then adding a card to that.
I'm not asking for much - I want sounds just like the real thing, and need it to cost peanuts. ;-) Since my lack of cash is matched by an equal lack of piddle time, I also depend on module instruments being ready for prime-time right out of the box, so I can spend my time writing music rather than tweeking patches.
The JV-1010 will not get me out of my day job (not looking to anyway, since I happen to like it), but it's carried me a great deal further along the way. I'm currently playing with a Boss DR-770, which is (drum-wise) a couple of notches up from the drum sounds of the JV, but not there yet.
Anybody tried the Roland TD-5? One thing I like about Roland is that their lower-priced modules strip the tweeking and front-panel controls, but the sounds are good. For instance, according to the docs, the JV-1010 has all the instruments of the JV-1080, which costs almost twice as much. I'm kinda hoping the TD-5 is of that philosophy, since the TD-8 is a little steep.
Any takers on that?
