For many years it was the same scenario in the nursing home circuit. And, in some areas of the world it still is. Many novice entertainers and home players sometimes go to nursing homes and offer them an hour or two of music at no charge. Most cannot play worth a damned and by and large they are not singers. (There are exceptions, but they are few, and far between.)
The vast majority of these individuals are well meaning and feel they are providing a service to the nursing home residents and cheering them up. Most ADs in my area no longer use volunteer entertainers. Remember the the old saying "You get what you pay for!" It really holds true in the entertainment biz.
