I can do this with my JV 1010, so I don't see why you couldn't with the XP-80. Here's what I do... In the sequencer that is playing the GM file, I first edit each track (using a computer based sequencer) by re-choosing the same patch. But here I specify the MSB and the LSB in order to select the GM bank (probably Preset D no?). Then I set the JV-1010 to Performance mode, not GM mode. This lets me select the expansion board ( I like the Session Card that came with it). Just make sure you're playing a track that the sequencer is not using and you should be fine.
I hope I conveyed my thoughts correctly. I know I can do what you want to do with my jv 1010 and I'm sure you can do it with the XP-80.
