Mcintosh or Windows OS?
If for Windows, what Operating System and is it to be 32 bit or 64 bit?
What *type* of recording do you wish to accomplish? A "one man show" multitracked recording can be done with a lot simpler soundcard or sound device, one that has but the one Stereo input available since you would likely only be recording one stereo or two mono tracks at once. They are less expensive than the multiple-input sound devices, and typically simpler to use and use less computer resources. If, however, you are planning to record an entire band at once, or even just a drumkit with multiple mics to multiple tracks, the mission becomes both more expensive and more complex at the same time, but there are solutions for both.
Finally, recording on the computer is a situation where you will have to be complete in your descriptions and questions. Just part of the whole thing, really. It can get really complicated real fast or it can be an easy situation if you take the right attitude towards the upcoming learning curve.
