If she is seeing a thin line or two going down, or across the display, there's a possibility the display is on it's way to being dead sometime in the immediate future. If you look at the PSR-3000s display from the side you will see the tiny florescent bulbs that backlight the screen. They, like all light bulbs, have a specific life span, which, unfortunately, is not as long as we would hope. If the keyboard was purchased when the 3000 first came on the market, played extensively and the contrast was set on maximum, there's a good chance the display is on it's last leg.
To test this, mere hook up a TV or portable DVD player with an auxiliary input to the video output of the keyboard. If the lines are on the TV display as well, then the video card is the likely suspect. If the lines are not present, the display is headed south.
Replacement cost for the display can range up to $500, which is not cost effective for a keyboard of this vintage.
Hope this helps,
Gary
