Friday I played a private party in Ft. Worth, TX. It happened to be at Shady Oaks Country Club, where Ben Hogan lived and played.
It was amazing to see all the photos and memorabilia of him. His lockers remained exactly as he left them, including medicines, ointments, tees, ball markers, coins, golf gloves, balls, etc. There were several sets of pants, dozens of sweaters and many pairs of golf shoes, just like they were waiting for him to come put them on.
There were displays of several sets of his clubs, including various ones he used to win big tournaments. It gave me chills.
I was invited to play the course for free Saturday, but had another job back in Louisiana, so they said I could come back and bring some friends and play the course anytime I wanted, as their guest.
I was treated like Royalty! I guess sometimes you have to go out of town to be appreciated!!
Get your clubs out SemiLive. Road trip ahead!!

Don,

Thanks for sharing that it's a hell of nice thing to happen to you. I hate golf, too slow, Don I wonder if they will leave all your gear around like that when you go. My wife will just get a skip and throw all mine in it, dead Friday forgotten Monday.

Is it my imagination, but do you always post these stories for us when we're driving through 4 inches of snow?

Don, because I grew up on the Monterey Peninsula, CA (renowned golf capital of the world) and popular site of the US open , nearly every kid growing up here is expected to play golf, so I first learned the game in my early teens. Unfortunately I quickly grew bored as it didn't involve much physical activity other than walking (or riding ) from hole to hole. Entering middle age I'm now reconsidered taking it up again, but both the expensive green fees & having to suffer the humility of having to learn from scratch again have kept me discouraged, as I'm definitely better at keyboards and music than than golf.

Hi Don:

Glad you spent some time at Shady Oaks. Years ago, I played golf there from time to time with my boss from California. Ben Hogan was still living then and one day I had the privilege of demonstrating my lack of sand skills right in front of the club house dining room where Ben would take his meals.

I sent the ball from trap to trap surrounding the green... at least four times. Finally, mercy arrived and I was able to putt out. Later, upon being introduced to that great man, he advised me to consider another hobby... LOL!

Yep, one of life's most embarassing moments.

Merry Christmas,

Dave
