I watch my daughter struggle with a similar handicap every day. Her left arm is paralyzed from a motorcycle accident. After 10 days in the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Unit, a facility that is world renown, she was transferred to Kernan Hospital for rehab. By the end of the first week in Kernam she had taught herself to tie her shoes with one hand. Today, almost a decade later, she is pretty much self reliant. I am extremely proud of her.
The biggest problem she now faces is discrimination, people who have a preconceived notion that because she has lost the use of her arm she cannot do certain things. And, those same people tend to place every obstacle they can in her way to make some tasks nearly impossible. Despite this, she has been able to persevere. In many ways, she and Tony Melendez have a lot in common.
