According to my accounting software, I've spent upwards of $75.00 on purchased sheet music in the last 12 months...

For years I bought books, fakebooks, sheet music, etc. I have many boxes of these in the attic. I guess I should sell or donate them to someone who might use them. Almost every new song I learn now, I just write down the lyrics and chords, listen to a recording and figure it out.
I have downloaded some "free" stuff also, just in case I ever need it. The times they are a-changin'!
I didn't mean to be critical because I download lyrics, chords, midi files, styles, etc. all the time. I do fear that all this sharing will eventually hurt new development. In fact it already has.

More than some, less than others, I suppose?

There are times when I get a copy of something from someone that's not a complete score. Maybe its a roughed out lead sheet, maybe its a poor quality sheet music, etc. It gives me the chance to give it a test run and see if its something I want to take to the next level. Often I'll then buy the music from one of the online merchants for my working copy.

I use this method too, as the sheet music notes, chords, and even lyrics half the time don't reflect what's actually played on the original recording anyway.

Because lyrics and chords alone aren't usually copyrightable, they're widely available for free online. I use them, but then also find the song on YouTube, and listen, play along by ear, and compare it with the lyrics and chords on the downloaded lyric and chords, and simply make changes as needed to match the original recording. The internet has certainly revolutionized the way we're able to discover and learn new songs, and all for FREE too! Is this a good thing? You decide.
